🔥 Fire Prevention Week | October 4–10 🔥

This year, Fire Prevention Week is all about safe charging! 🔋⚡

Lithium-ion batteries power many of the devices we use every day, but improper charging can increase the risk of battery fires. A few simple habits can help keep your home, family, and community safer.

🔌 5 Safe Charging Tips:

1️⃣ Don’t use cheap or damaged chargers. Use the charger recommended by the manufacturer or that came with your device.

2️⃣ Avoid soft surfaces. Charge your devices on a hard, flat surface (e.g. table, desk)—not on beds, couches, or pillows.

3️⃣ Fully charged? Unplug it! Don’t leave devices charging longer than necessary.

4️⃣ Charge large batteries safely. E-bikes, scooters, and power tools should be charged outdoors when possible and away from exits and anything that can burn.

5️⃣ Feels hot? Stop using it! If a battery or device becomes unusually hot, swollen, damaged, or starts to smell strange, stop using it and move away from it.

🔥 Safe charging starts with you! Small changes can help prevent lithium-ion battery fires and keep our homes and communities safer.

Don't worry, we are back with another furry friend this month – LUNA! Luna takes her job as the family’s official phone-charging police very seriously. The second Mom and Dad forget to unplug their phones when they’re fully charged, she’s on the case with a bark or two to remind them who’s really in charge!

FIRE EXITS & ESCAPE ROUTES 🏃

As we wrap up our back-to-school fire prevention series, let’s make sure everyone knows what to do before a fire happens! 🔥

🎒 Don’t leave backpacks, sports bags, shoes, or other belongings where they can block an exit or create a tripping hazard.

🚪 Keep exit routes clear: In an emergency, every second counts. Everyone needs to be able to get out quickly and safely.

🚨 Check your alarms: Make sure you have working smoke alarms at school and know where the fire extinguishers are located.

🏃 Practice your escape plan: Practice evacuation drills at both school and home. Know at least two ways out whenever possible and have a designated meeting place outside.

👨‍👩‍👧 Know what to do: Talk with your family, children, and students about what to do if a fire starts at home or in a classroom. When the alarm sounds, get out, stay out, and call 911

🐶 Archie’s Fire Safety Tip:
“Don’t wait until the smoke alarm starts barking to figure out your escape plan! 🐾🚨 Practice it ahead of time so when the alarm goes off, you can get out safely—no sniffing around required!”

Back-To-School Fire Safety: TAKE FIRE DRILLS SERIOUSLY! 🚨

When the fire alarm sounds, do you know what to do?
Fire drills aren’t just a break from class; they are an opportunity to practice what to do in a real emergency!

Remember these important fire drill tips:
🚨 Leave the building immediately when the alarm sounds.
🧑‍🏫 Follow your teacher’s instructions and use the designated evacuation route.
🚪 Never use elevators during a fire alarm.
🏃 Don’t stop to grab your backpack or personal belongings.
📍 Go directly to your designated meeting area and stay there until told it is safe to return.
Practicing these steps helps everyone know exactly what to do in an emergency.

🐶 Archie’s Fire Safety Tip:
“Fire drills are the one time you shouldn’t be late for class! When that alarm goes off, don’t stop for your backpack, your snack, or even to finish your homework. Get outside safely… the homework will still be waiting for you!”

SAFE USE OF LITHIUM BATTERIES 🔋

From laptops and tablets to phones, headphones, and other electronics, many students use devices powered by lithium-ion batteries every day. 💻

A few simple habits can help prevent battery-related fires:

🔌 Use the right charger: Always charge devices using the manufacturer’s charger or an approved replacement.

👀 Don’t charge unattended: Avoid leaving devices charging while you’re away or asleep.

⚠️ Watch for damage: If a battery or charger is damaged, swollen, unusually hot, or behaving strangely, stop using it and replace it safely.

🛏️ Skip the bed: Charge devices on a hard, flat surface, NOT on your bed, couch, or under a pillow where heat can build up.

🐶 Archie’s Fire Safety Tip:
“Your bed is for sleeping, not charging! Keep those batteries off the blankets and on a hard surface. I may love naps, but I definitely don’t want to wake up to a fire!” 🐾

🚨 APPLICATION DEADLINE IS APPROACHING! 🚨

🚒 The Jasper Fire Department is recruiting volunteer firefighters, and there is still time to apply! 🧑‍🚒

Applications accepted until 4:00 p.m. of September 15, 2026.

Volunteer firefighters play an important role in keeping our community safe — responding to emergencies, training alongside their fellow firefighters, and being ready to step up when they’re needed.
It’s a meaningful role, but it’s also a commitment. We’re looking for people who are ready to learn, work as part of a team, and take on the responsibility that comes with serving their community.

SAFE CLASSROOM & SCHOOL HABITS:
A new school year means new routines, and it’s the perfect time to make fire safety part of the routine!

🐶⭐ MEET ARCHIE! ⭐🐶
This month, we’re featuring one of the coolest dogs around—Archie! He’ll be joining us throughout September to help share some important back-to-school fire safety tips!

📚 Keep Classrooms Tidy
Keep classrooms, hallways, and work areas clean and free of potential fire hazards.
🔌 Keep Electrical Areas Clear
Avoid clutter around electrical outlets, heaters, power bars, and other heat sources. Keep flammable materials safely away.
🧪 Use Equipment Safely
Always use lab equipment, art supplies, electronics, and other materials properly and responsibly.
👨‍🏫 Adults Lead by Example
Teachers and staff can help keep classrooms organized, accessible, and free from fire hazards.

🐾🔥 ARCHIE’S FIRE SAFETY TIP:
“Don’t block the exits with your backpacks! I may be the school’s coolest dog, but even I can’t squeeze through a pile of backpacks during a fire drill! 🐶🎒”
Stay safe. Stay prepared. We hope everyone has a fantastic school year!

💦 FireSmart & Rooftop Sprinkler Protection Program 🏠

Did you know that when you complete a FireSmart assessment with the Fire Department and purchase rooftop sprinklers through us, we add your address to a map showing which homes have sprinklers?

This information is important during a wildfire evacuation. If residents need to evacuate, the Fire Department can use this map to identify homes with rooftop sprinklers that need to be activated by us to help protect your property.

🏠 Installed your own rooftop sprinklers?
Please let the Fire Department know so we can add your home to our map. Email [email protected] with your address and sprinkler information.

🔥 Haven’t had a FireSmart assessment yet?
We encourage residents to continue booking assessments and learning how they can reduce wildfire risk around their homes.

👉 Book your FireSmart assessment and apply for the Residential FireSmart Sprinkler Protection Program here:

Together, we can help protect our homes and our community. ❤️🏠

🌬 Using Common Sense with Weather Conditions ☀️

Before lighting a campfire or firing up the grill, take a moment to check the weather.

☀️ Always consider current weather conditions before lighting a fire.
💨 Avoid campfires or grills during high winds, dry conditions, or when fire bans are in effect. Check here for local fire bans: https://www.albertafirebans.ca/
🔥 Even a small spark can spread quickly and start a fire.
📲 Stay alert to changing weather conditions and postpone outdoor fires if it becomes unsafe.

Making the safe choice today helps protect our communities, forests, and everyone enjoying the outdoors. 🌲❤️

🐶 Luna's reminder: "If my ears are flapping like I'm in a convertible, it's probably too windy for a campfire."
