❄️ First snow day of the year for caribou at the conservation breeding centre, and the first snow day ever for this year's calves! 🦌

For the adult caribou, it's a familiar sign that winter is on its way. For the youngest members of the herd, it's a chance to taste fresh snow and make their very first tracks.

They look fluffy. They look friendly. They look like they’d give great hugs. We assure you, they do not!

Wild animals need (and deserve) some space. And honestly, who doesn’t?

For everyone’s safety, keep your distance:

🚌🚌🚌 30 metres (3 bus lengths): Elk, moose, caribou, bighorn sheep and goats

And yes, the little ones count too! 🐿️🐦 If your presence makes an animal move, you’re too close. Time to back up.

If wildlife starts coming your way, you're the one who should move.

Once you’ve got your camera ready, keep a few simple safety tips in mind for a safe and enjoyable night under the stars:

🌙 Visit your chosen site during the daytime first so you can get familiar with the area and trail.
🧥 Come prepared with warm clothing, a headlamp and trail-traction aids if needed.
🚗 Park in roadside pull-outs and designated parking areas.

Then, settle in, look up and enjoy the night sky. ✨

🗻 Being prepared for the unexpected is key to staying safe in the mountains. 🗻

At first light on October 5, 2026, Parks Canada’s Visitor Safety team in Jasper National Park responded to a rescue on Mount Andromeda. Two climbers had fallen around midnight while ascending the Andromeda Strain route and were stranded three-quarters of the way up.

High winds and challenging conditions limited helicopter operations and ruled out several rescue options. The Jasper Visitor Safety team was flown to a lower point on the mountain and then climbed to the top of the route. They completed a 100-metre rope rescue to reach the injured climbers, then escorted them down the mountain. The highly technical operation lasted approximately 18 hours from the initial call for help.

📌 This rescue is an important reminder to climbers and backcountry users to prepare for unexpected nights in the mountains and prolonged rescue response times when weather, darkness, or operational limitations delay rescue efforts.

If you’re travelling in the alpine, always carry:
• extra clothing layers
• first aid supplies
• food and water

✔️ Make sure you also have the equipment, knowledge and skills to retreat from a route when conditions allow.

Now this is another Heated Rivalry we can get behind! 🚽🏒

We regret to inform everyone that a toilet paper rivalry has begun. 🧻

After seeing Jasper National Park's numbers, we checked our own.

The Banff Field Unit (Banff East Gate to Castle Junction and parts in between) went through 4,500km or 15,000 rolls of toilet paper this summer. That distance gets you by car from Banff to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico (4,459km) or Kouchibouguac National Park in New Brunswick. (4,589 km).

Banff also went through 1,435L of Hand soap and 780L of hand sanitizer - the average size of an 8-person hot tub!

A big shout-out to the facilities team who worked hard all season to keep washrooms clean, stocked, and ready for visitors. 🙌

Like Jasper, we maintain most roadside outhouses in the winter, with reduced service levels. Tunnel Mountain Village II campground is open through the winter, make your camping reservation on the Parks Canada Reservation System.

When did learning become something we had to do inside? 🤔🍂

Sure, temperatures are dropping, snow might already be on the ground, and staying cozy indoors can be tempting, but on October 26, we’re saying: TAKE IT OUTSIDE! 🌲🥾

🏞️ Explore what’s around you: Join a virtual program like the ones organized here, or head to a local park, nature centre or museum for an in-person experience. Then take what you've learned outside and see it in action!

🎨 Bring the outdoors in: Collect something from outside (where appropriate!) and turn it into a craft, investigation or hands-on classroom activity.

🦋 Connect with local experts: Invite conservation experts into your classroom to teach a skill, give a talk, share on-the-land and lived experiences or or lead a hands-on activity that gets your class outside and learning.

🏔️❄️ Mountain weather plays by its own rules.

It might still feel like fall down below, but at higher elevations, winter can arrive without much warning. Temperatures drop fast, snow can show up early, and road conditions can change in a hurry.

If you’re heading into the mountains or travelling the Icefields Parkway this winter, a little planning goes a long way.

This summer, volunteers from far and wide pitched in to tackle the spread of invasive species in Jasper National Park!

Tourism Jasper's EcoQuest program saw more than 1,000 new photos uploaded and reported on iNaturalist, helping build the our crew's awareness of invasive plants in the park.

Then came the boots-on-the-ground action! 💪

Local residents and businesses rolled up their sleeves through Parks Canada's Adopt a Patch program and removed 75 bags of invasive plants from 10 w**d patches covering almost 50,000m2. Their efforts targeted medium- to high-priority invasive species.

💚 Thank you to everyone who helped protect Jasper’s natural spaces this summer. Together, we’re making a difference -- one photo, one plant, one patch at a time!

Despite the cooler weather, it’s still wildfire season. 🍂🔥

In the fall, plant moisture is low and wild grass is tall in Jasper National Park. Until snow and freezing temperatures arrive and plants begin to die, dry grass can increase the risk of wildfires.

Having a campfire this fall? Do it safely:
✔️ Keep campfires small and use only designated fire pits or boxes. Always attend your fire.
✔️ Fully extinguish your campfire with water before leaving. Soak it, stir it, and soak it again until it’s cool to the touch.
