⚠️ PUBLIC SAFETY ALERT – DOWNED POWER LINES ⚠️

Storms, high winds, and vehicle collisions can bring power lines down unexpectedly. Always assume downed lines are LIVE and extremely dangerous.

🔌 If you see a downed power line:
• Stay at least 10 metres (33 feet) away
• Do NOT touch the line or anything in contact with it
• Keep others away from the area
• Call 9-1-1 and notify your utility provider immediately

🚗 If a power line falls on your vehicle:
• Stay inside if safe to do so
• Call 9-1-1 and wait for emergency crews
• Only exit if there is immediate danger such as fire

⚡ If you MUST exit:
• Jump clear with both feet together
• Do NOT touch the vehicle and ground at the same time
• Shuffle away with small steps while keeping your feet together

🌧️ After storms, hazards may be hidden.

Electricity can travel through the ground and nearby objects.
👉 Distance is your best protection.

Stay safe and stay alert.

June is Senior Safety Month 👵👴❤️

As we recognize Senior Safety Month, it's a great opportunity to check in on the older adults in our families, neighbourhoods, and communities. A few simple steps can help seniors remain safe, healthy, independent, and confident in their homes.

Key Safety Tips for Seniors:

🏠 Prevent Falls

Remove tripping hazards such as loose rugs and clutter.
Ensure hallways and stairways are well lit.
Install grab bars in bathrooms and handrails on stairs.
Wear properly fitted, non-slip footwear.

🔥 Practice Fire Safety

Test smoke alarms monthly and replace batteries as needed.
Keep exits clear and have a home escape plan.
Avoid overloading electrical outlets.
Never leave cooking unattended.

💊 Manage Medications Safely

Use a pill organizer or medication reminder system.
Review medications regularly with a healthcare professional.
Store medications safely and follow prescribed directions.

📞 Stay Connected

Keep emergency contact numbers easily accessible.
Check in regularly with family, friends, or neighbours.
Consider a medical alert system if living alone.

🌦️ Prepare for Emergencies

Maintain a 72-hour emergency kit.
Have flashlights, batteries, medications, and important documents readily available.
Know who to call during severe weather or power outages.

🚗 Drive and Travel Safely

Stay current with vision and medical checkups.
Plan routes ahead of time and avoid driving in poor weather conditions when possible.

❤️ Look Out for One Another
A simple phone call, visit, or helping hand can make a significant difference. Senior safety is a community effort, and together we can help ensure our older residents remain safe, supported, and connected.

This month, take a few minutes to check on an older family member, friend, or neighbour. It may be one of the most important things you do.

Good leaders in the fire service are not the ones who demand respect — they are the ones who earn it through honesty, integrity, fairness, and the way they treat their people.

They recognize the hardworking members of the team, encourage growth, and understand that a strong department is built on teamwork, trust, and respect.

They lead by example, support personal and professional development, and genuinely want to see the next generation succeed.

A true fire service leader wants young firefighters to grow, learn, stay safe, and one day become old firefighters — experienced, respected, and still standing beside the team they helped build.

Great leaders don’t hold others back.

They lift them up.
They build confidence.
They create unity.
And they leave the fire service better than they found it.

Because leadership isn’t about power —
it’s about people, purpose, and paving the way for others to succeed.

Don't Use Your Warming Drawer as Storage

Many people use the warming drawer under their stove to store oven mitts, towels, baking sheets, plastic containers, paper products, or other kitchen items. While it may seem convenient, it can create a serious fire hazard.

Why It's Dangerous

A warming drawer is designed to keep food warm and can become very hot during use. Items stored inside may:

🔥 Ignite if exposed to heat for extended periods
🔥 Smoulder unnoticed before bursting into flames
🔥 Melt and produce toxic smoke
🔥 Block proper airflow or interfere with the drawer's operation

Common Items That Should Never Be Stored in a Warming Drawer

❌ Oven mitts and pot holders
❌ Dish towels and cloths
❌ Paper plates, napkins, or takeout containers
❌ Plastic containers or bags
❌ Cleaning products
❌ Aerosol cans

Safety Tips

✅ Keep warming drawers empty when not in use.
✅ Store oven mitts, towels, and paper products in a separate cabinet away from heat sources.
✅ Know whether the drawer beneath your stove is a warming drawer, storage drawer, or broiler compartment. Check your owner's manual if unsure.
✅ Teach all household members about the purpose of the drawer and the hazards of improper storage.

Did You Know?

Many kitchen fires start because combustible items are stored too close to a heat source. Something as simple as an oven mitt left in a warming drawer can quickly turn into a dangerous situation.

Take a moment today to check what's stored under your stove. It could help prevent a fire in your home.

June is PTSD Awareness Month

Behind many uniforms are stories people may never see.

Firefighters, paramedics, police, dispatchers, military members, healthcare workers, and community members can all be affected by post-traumatic stress. PTSD is not weakness. It is an injury that deserves understanding, support, and proper care.

This month is a reminder to check in on one another, speak with compassion, and help reduce the stigma around mental health.

You do not have to struggle alone. Reaching out is a sign of strength.

If you or someone you know needs support:
📞 9-8-8 — Call or text for mental health crisis support in Canada
📞 Boots on the Ground — 24/7 anonymous peer support for Ontario first responders: 1-833-677-BOOT (2668)
📞 911 — Call immediately if there is an emergency or someone is in immediate danger

You are not alone. Help is available. Reaching out is a sign of strength.
💙 Awareness saves lives.
💙 Support matters.
💙 It’s okay to ask for help.

🔥 4 WAYS TO EXTINGUISH A FIRE 🔥

Understanding how fire behaves is one of the most important foundations in fire safety and firefighting. Fire requires four elements to survive: heat, fuel, oxygen, and a chemical chain reaction. Remove any one of these — and the fire goes out.

🚒 The 4 Methods:
💧 Cooling – Removes heat
🫧 Smothering – Removes oxygen
⛽ Starvation – Removes fuel
🧪 Chain Reaction Inhibition – Stops the chemical reaction

Knowing these principles helps firefighters choose the right tactics and helps the public better understand how fires are controlled safely and effectively.

🔥 Remove one… and the fire is gone.

🏠🚨 HIDDEN TOXINS IN THE HOME 🚨🏠

Not all dangers in your home are easy to see.

Older homes — and even newer ones — can contain hidden hazards that may affect your health and safety over time.

⚠️ Common hidden risks include:
🦠 Mold & moisture problems
🎨 Lead from older paint and materials
🌫️ Poor indoor air quality
☢️ Radon gas — the invisible risk

These hazards can contribute to:
• Breathing and respiratory issues
• Headaches and fatigue
• Long-term health concerns
• Increased cancer risks with prolonged exposure

✅ What you can do:
✔️ Fix leaks and moisture problems early
✔️ Test older homes before renovations
✔️ Change furnace filters regularly
✔️ Improve ventilation in your home
✔️ Install and maintain smoke & CO alarms
✔️ Test your home for radon

📢 Radon is a naturally occurring gas that can build up inside homes — and the only way to know your level is to test.

Protect your home. Protect your family.

🟡 SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH IN EFFECT ⛈️

Environment Canada has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for our area.

Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms capable of producing:

🌬️ Wind gusts up to 90 km/h
🧊 Toonie-sized hail
⚡ Frequent lightning
🌧️ Heavy downpours

Timing: This afternoon and this evening.

Thunderstorms are expected to develop this afternoon and continue into the evening hours. Localized power outages and hazardous travel conditions are possible.

What You Should Do:

✅ Secure loose outdoor items such as patio furniture, tents, trampolines, and garbage bins.
✅ Charge phones and electronic devices in case of power outages.
✅ Move vehicles indoors if possible to protect them from hail damage.
✅ Monitor weather alerts and changing conditions throughout the day.

🏠 If threatening weather approaches, take shelter immediately in a basement or interior room away from windows.

🚶‍♂️ If you are outdoors, seek shelter and protect yourself from flying debris and hail.

⚡ When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors! Lightning can strike several kilometres away from a storm and remains a serious danger.

Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada and Emergency Management Ontario.

Stay safe and stay weather aware.
