Who knew berry picking involved so much knowledge? There's geography in knowing where berries grow, science in understanding the plants and growing conditions, and generations of ecological knowledge behind knowing when and how to harvest.

Add in storytelling, language and teachings shared along the way, and you begin to see just how much learning takes place during something as familiar as berry picking.

The Summer Guardians had the opportunity to experience this firsthand while gathering and learning to store soapberries. These experiences bring together practical skills, cultural knowledge and the responsibility of caring for the land so future generations can continue these practices.

Another hands-on learning experience for the Young Guardians!

Quanah George spent time with the youth, teaching them how to tan a hide and sharing the knowledge and skills involved in the process.

Hide tanning is a practice that takes patience, care and a lot of work. Having the opportunity to learn directly from someone with this knowledge gives youth a better understanding of the work involved and the importance of continuing these practices for future generations.

Fall Seasonal Round – LIwélsten

Yecwminte re Xqwllint (Take Care of Baby Basket Society) has rescheduled its Fall Seasonal Round, LIwélsten, to November 7, 2026.

The event will include an information fair highlighting the Society's work, along with wellness activities available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Date: Saturday, November 7, 2026
Time: 12:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.
Location: Delta Hotel, Kamloops

The Young Guardians took on some new challenges this summer, including learning how to safely operate a chainsaw!

Working with Steve Telosky, a chainsaw safety instructor with the BC Forest Safety Council, the guardians received hands-on training in safe handling, maintenance and cutting techniques.

You never know what you'll come across when working out on the land. From fallen trees blocking trails to helping maintain access to important areas, knowing how to safely operate a chainsaw is a pretty useful skill to have. It's also the kind of hands-on experience that builds confidence and gives the guardians skills they can put to use long after the summer is over.

For Secwépemc families, the history of residential schools is not something we only think about on September 30th. It is part of our families, our communities and the generations living with its impacts today. On Orange Shirt Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we remember the children who never came home and honour Survivors and their families.

Today is also an opportunity to recognize the WPCIB Young Guardians and what they are learning, doing and carrying forward.

This summer, the Guardians chose to spend their time learning Secwépemctsín, cultural knowledge, land stewardship, food sovereignty and practical skills. They learned from others, supported community through a summer of wildfires and gained a lot of experience along the way. We are proud of these young people and the time they committed to learning throughout their summer.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing some of their stories, what they did and learned, and the people who shared their time and knowledge with them.

Today we remember and honour, and we are proud to begin sharing some of what the Summer Guardians have been doing right here at home.
