I’m an introvert. I’m terrified of ‘peopling,’ as we all say. Anything to do with socializing or big meetings, that stuff always scares me because it’s a lot of people, a lot of pressure, like, ‘Oh God, I have to perform.’

But I figured if I joined these things, that could be one way to naturally meet people. My goal as a student was to get the contact information for the person who sat next to me in every class. It was a low-pressure enough goal. It was my way of getting out of my comfort zone, and that’s been a great benefit.

Later, I said yes to so many things thanks to Alicia Ashcroft, my mentor, because I was terrified. If I didn't have Alicia, I feel like I wouldn't have said yes to as many things...like being on camera. I don't like attention on me. But when she said, ‘I’ll be there to guide you,’ I was like, ‘Okay, somebody who is the master of cameras will be there for me, so I can just safely rely on her.’ That’s how I got through it.”

The river may look cool and inviting on a summer day, but a quick dip can become very dangerous very quickly.

Riverside Park is our summertime go-to, as it’s the only designated swimming area in Kamloops, especially when lifeguards are on duty.

“In high school and the first couple of years of university, I didn’t particularly like reading and writing courses—English, social studies, that kind of thing. I wasn't a super social person and was pretty quiet. And now, all I do all day is talk to people, read, and write. That's all I do. It’s funny looking back that the things I didn't like the most are exactly what I'm doing now. I think it's the context. Now, I’m doing it to help students, about things I’m passionate about.”

They’re furry, cuddly and oh so cute. Dogs are also an important part of the TRU Veterinary Technology Program.

But if you see a vet tech student walking a dog on campus wearing a yellow ribbon or bandana on its leash or collar, please give it space as that dog is in training.

Program dogs are in training throughout the year, so you might see a dog with a yellow bandana on campus at any time.

“I was a first-generation student. My father had a grade 9 education, and my mother has a secretarial certificate. We didn’t have computers growing up. I remember my first few years of university, and my mom would actually type out my essays for me on a typewriter.

To be honest, I don't think I would have ever imagined I'd be in this job. I saw education as my way to progress and move forward in my life, but I don't think I ever dreamed of becoming an AVP for students. That was something that seemed not realistic at all. So I think every day, the work that I do, I'm amazed that I'm doing it.”
