BE BEAR READY 🐻
Bears are active throughout the community at this time of year and may be attracted to easy food sources like garbage, fruit, pet food and birdseed.
A few simple steps can help prevent human-bear conflict and keep our community and wildlife safe.
AT HOME
• Secure garbage and waste where wildlife cannot access it, such as in a garage, shed or enclosed area.
• Put garbage out only on collection day, not the night before.
• Keep pet food, bowls and other food sources indoors.
• Pick fruit as it ripens and remove fallen fruit.
• Keep BBQs clean and free of grease.
• Talk with your neighbours about managing attractants. Keeping attractants secure is a community effort.
• Stay alert around windows, doors and open spaces. Bears can follow scents into homes.
ON THE TRAILS
• Make noise when approaching blind corners, rivers and areas with natural bear food.
• Hike in groups and keep dogs on leash.
• Watch for signs of bear activity, including claw marks, s**t and overturned logs.
• Pack out everything you bring in.
IF YOU ENCOUNTER A BEAR
• Stop, stay calm and assess the situation.
• Do not run or turn your back.
• Back away slowly and give the bear plenty of space.
• Speak calmly and avoid direct eye contact.
• Be prepared to use deterrents if necessary.
