We’re heading to the Valleyview Block Party!

The BC Wildlife Park will be joining the Valleyview community on September 12 from 11:00 AM to 3:00PM at Valleyview Centennial Park and Community Hall - and we’re bringing a very special guest!

Grizz will be there! Come say hello, take a photo, and learn more about the BC Wildlife Park and the animals we care for.

The Valleyview Block Party is a free, family-friendly community event featuring live music, local vendors, food trucks, kids’ activities, community booths, and plenty of opportunities to connect with neighbours and local businesses.

With dozens of vendors and community groups taking part, there will be lots to see, do, and discover!

Come spend the day with us and say hello to Grizz!

Kirk’s Enrichment Walk Took a Refreshing Turn!

Kirk, our male caribou, recently headed out for an enrichment walk around the BC Wildlife Park, and this time his route included a stop at our new Spray Park!

Enrichment walks give Kirk the opportunity to experience different sights, scents, surfaces and areas outside his habitat, providing plenty of mental and physical stimulation.

Kirk got to check out the Spray Park, and now it’s your turn! Come cool off and enjoy the refreshing water before the Spray Park closes for the season on September 13th.

We are open daily from 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM, with last admission at 4:30 PM.

What seems simple to us can spark Buck’s curiosity!

For Buck the fisher, a new object in his habitat is an opportunity to explore, sniff and investigate.

Zookeeper Sabien prepared an enrichment with branches and treats, and Buck was very interested in finding out what was inside!

Enrichment like this encourages natural behaviours such as exploring, foraging and problem-solving, helping keep Buck mentally stimulated and engaged.

Come visit Buck and see what he’s curious about next!

A New Hangout Spot for Our Raccoons!

There’s something new in the raccoon den! Zookeeper Sabien made a hammock for our raccoons and installed it right inside their den. Of course, it didn’t take long for them to start checking it out.

Besides giving them a new place to rest, the hammock is also a great form of enrichment. It encourages the raccoons to climb, investigate and interact with something different in their environment.

Raccoons are naturally curious animals, so adding new objects and structures helps encourage their natural behaviours while keeping their environment interesting.

We have a feeling Sabien’s handmade hammock is going to get plenty of use!

Stop by the raccoon habitat on your next visit and see if you can spot someone enjoying the new setup.

Tongue-Out Tuesday with Kirk!

Did you know there’s a reason Kirk’s tongue looks heart-shaped at the tip?

A caribou’s tongue has a broad, divided tip with two rounded lobes. This natural anatomy creates the heart-like shape you can see when Kirk sticks out his tongue.

But his tongue is more than just cute! It’s an important feeding tool that helps caribou grasp, pull and manipulate vegetation while feeding.

Now you know the science behind Kirk’s little heart-shaped tongue!

Miss Prickles is clearly enjoying her peach enrichment, and we’re pretty sure you’re going to enjoy your visit to the park just as much.

Meet Duncan the Barn Owl, our newest member at the Park!

At just 5 months old, Duncan is already beginning an exciting new chapter here at the BC Wildlife Park. But his story actually began with a very unexpected arrival!

Duncan’s mother came to the BC Wildlife Park hidden in a load of hay from Washington. She was later moved to Vancouver Island to The Raptos, where we made an agreement to take one of her babies if she had any. We waited patiently and at the end of March, Duncan was born!

Now, Duncan is starting to get acquainted with his new surroundings and the other animals at the park. In this video, you can see some of his early introductions as he begins his training and prepares for his important role as an animal ambassador.

Duncan will be supporting our education programs through public demonstrations, educational activities, training demonstrations, animal encounters, and meet-and-greets.

We’re so excited to watch Duncan grow into his role and help visitors learn more about these incredible birds!

Happy 16th Birthday, Autumn!

Autumn the elk is officially 16, and Zookeeper Sabien had the perfect way to celebrate with a special enrichment cake prepared just for her.

Of course, Autumn wasn’t the only one interested in the cake! Spring and Summer quickly came over to see what she had received and helped themselves to a few bites too.

Autumn and the rest of our elk are important ambassadors for their species. Seeing them at the Park gives visitors the opportunity to learn more about elk, their behaviours, adaptations, and their important role in British Columbia’s ecosystems.

Make sure to visit the elk on your next trip to the BC Wildlife Park and wish Autumn a very happy 16th birthday!

It’s with Mia!

Mia the red fox had her tongue on full display when Zookeeper Sabien snapped this photo, making it a perfect fit for today!

Did you know? Foxes don’t sweat through their skin like humans do. When they get warm, they pant, allowing moisture to evaporate from the tongue and respiratory tract and helping release excess body heat. So, a tongue-out fox may actually be using an important way to cool down!
