FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Kapuskasing Friendship Centre Encourages Community Unity, Respect, and Support for All
Kapuskasing, ON, Moose Cree Homeland, Treaty 9 – The Kapuskasing Friendship Centre is encouraging all community members to come together with compassion, understanding, and respect as our community continues to welcome Indigenous families who have been displaced from their home communities due to ongoing emergency circumstances.
We recognize that this situation has raised questions and concerns for many community members. We believe the best way forward is through respectful dialogue, understanding, collaboration, and solutions that support the well-being and safety of everyone in our community. By listening to one another, sharing perspectives, and working together in a spirit of kindness and respect, we can identify balanced approaches that strengthen our community and support everyone who calls Kapuskasing home.
At the same time, it is important to remember that no individual or group should be unfairly blamed for broader challenges facing our community. Information shared on social media does not always provide the full context or complete story, and we encourage community members to seek accurate information, avoid assumptions, and approach conversations with respect and understanding.
The Kapuskasing Friendship Centre remains committed to promoting community safety, inclusion, and wellness. We do not condone petty crime, theft, violence, or any actions that cause harm to others. As Indigenous people, we are guided by teachings that remind us that Creator gave each of us gifts of kindness, honesty, sharing, and strength. These gifts help us care for one another and build healthy communities where every person is treated with dignity, fairness, and respect.
Many individuals and families, both local residents and those who have been displaced, are navigating stress, uncertainty, and difficult circumstances. This is a time for compassion, understanding, and community care.
The Kapuskasing Friendship Centre wants community members to know that support is available. Indigenous community members who wish to speak with Elders Patrick Etherington and Frances Whiskeychan, seek cultural guidance, or access emotional and wellness supports are encouraged to contact the Friendship Centre. Elders Frances Whiskeychan and Patrick Etherington will be available on Thursday of this week for those who would like support, guidance, or simply someone to listen. Community members can arrange to meet with her by stopping by on Thursday or calling the Friendship Centre.
The Kapuskasing Friendship Centre is exploring future opportunities for community gatherings, cultural activities, and initiatives that promote connection, understanding, and community care. More information will be shared as plans develop.
Kapuskasing is home to many caring, generous, and community-minded individuals who consistently step forward to support one another during times of need. By continuing to lead with respect, accountability, and compassion, we can build a stronger, safer, and more inclusive future for all.
