Last weekend, our Kaslo SAR canine team joined teams from Osoyoos, Kamloops, North Shore and Nakusp at the training camp in Osoyoos. They said it was very rewarding and exhausting, and both our canine and handler slept for many hours afterwards! Many thanks to Monique Worth for the photographs!

We'd like to extend a sincere thank you to the Community Fund of North Kootenay Lake Society for their support of our team through this year's grant program.

I had the opportunity to attend the AGM yesterday and was inspired to hear about the many worthwhile projects and organizations being supported throughout our region.

This year's funding will help KSAR purchase additional medical equipment to support our volunteers and the subjects we assist.

The Community Fund also kicked off its annual Treasure Hunt, with a chance to win $250 for yourself and a donation for your favourite local charity. We know a pretty great charity if you're looking for ideas! 😉 Check out their page for all the details.

Thank you again to CFNKLS for investing in the safety and well-being of our communities.

Dry land river rescue (Swiftwater) training this week, gave the team the opportunity to thoroughly run through multiple systems, before putting it into practice again on the river, at another training! The river environment is loud and communication can be more difficult, so training run throughs likes this ensure everyone is on the same page and gives all members the opportunity to learn and understand the whole system.

6 Of our Rope, Swiftwater and Class D Technicians spent an evening simulating and training through more advanced Class D scenarios, including Swiftwater, tree entrapment and Munter release. It is important to practice these skills in the real environment, and also in the 'dry land' environment where we can slow things down and thoroughly work through situations. Would you be comfortable hanging on a rope under a helicopter?

Due to the widespread power outage cutting off communication to some communities, the team was called out on the weekend to assist with flood Evacuation Alerts. The team started out with midnight tailgate campstove coffees and returned to Kaslo, post-task, for 5am morning views!

Mystery Gear Alert! 🤔

These two bins containing rope and camping gear were recently left beside the KSAR command trailer. The equipment appears to be older, but much of it looks new or never used.

We're trying to determine whether this was an intended donation, accidentally left behind, or belongs to someone who plans to return for it.

If you know anything about these bins or believe they may belong to you, please send us a message.

Thanks for helping us solve the mystery! 🚨🏕️🧗‍♂️

Rivers and creeks are running high, as they do most springs, and additional rainfall is expected over the coming days.

While there is no cause for alarm, it's a good reminder to stay well back from fast-moving water, avoid riverbanks that may be unstable, and keep children and pets away from swollen creeks and rivers.

Please use caution if you're spending time outdoors this weekend, and stay informed by following updates from the RDCK and BC River Forecast Centre.

Stay safe and enjoy the weekend.

RDCK Media Release - Flood watch issued for the entire RDCK

Follow the link for the complete details: https://www.rdck.ca/flood-watch-issued-for-the-entire-rdck/

The BC River Forecast Centre has issued a FLOOD WATCH for the entire West Kootenay region, this includes tributaries around Trout Lake, Lardeau River, Village of Kaslo, Nakusp, and City of Nelson, British Columbia.

Warmer weather over the past few days has led to increased snowmelt rates and rising river levels through the region. Severe weather, including moderate to heavy rainfall is expected to begin later Friday and extend through Monday and early Tuesday. Current modelling indicates the potential for the heaviest rains in the West Kootenay region - 50 to 100+ mm are expected through Monday.

High river flows are expected late Friday through Monday or Tuesday across the region. The current high end precipitation scenarios in weather models indicate the potential for flooding through the Kootenays.

Fast-flowing rivers pose increased risk to safety. Stay away from rivers and river banks, which can be unstable. Never drive through floodwaters, as unseen hazards and current can be life threatening.

Please report any erosion or flooding to the Provincial Emergency Coordination Centre at 1.800.663.3456
