Kaslo Housing Society will be at the Rural Seniors Health Summit this Friday. We are working on real affordable, intergenerational living, homes people can age in, alongside supporting seniors groups where we are needed. Come hear the BC Seniors' Advocate, then come find us.

BC Seniors Advocate Coming to Kaslo!

Dan Levitt, the BC Seniors’ Advocate, is the featured speaker at the Rural Seniors Health Summit, taking place on Friday, September 25th, at the Kaslo Golf Club from 1pm to 3pm. The event, hosted by the Victorian Hospital of Kaslo Auxiliary Society, is free and open to the public.

⚕ The Summit builds on the Aging Together Seniors Fair that took place in April. Levitt and a panel will continue the conversation about the needs of seniors in Kaslo & Area D. The special focus at this event will be expansion of Kaslo’s Long-term Care facility at the Victorian Community Health Centre.

⚕ VHKAS President Tyler Dobie will present the results of the Seniors Health and Housing Needs survey, which was circulated in Spring. Sarah Sinclair, Executive Director of the BC Rural Centre, will explain how Kaslo is an example of the challenges faced by BC rural communities. We will have representatives from Interior Health, the BC Rural Health Network, the MLA's office, the WKB Regional Hospital District Board, and over a dozen local senior-serving organizations.

⚕ The VHKAS Hospital Expansion Committee has been advocating for several years for an expansion to the Long-term care in Kaslo. The Kaslo facility has 18 beds for a population of over 850 seniors in the area—a ratio of one bed for every 47 seniors. In contrast, Nelson’s ratio is one bed for every 11 senior residents. This service disparity between rural communities and small cities means that people are often separated from their loved ones as their needs increase, which results in worse health outcomes.

Housing Friday: What Can We Learn from European Villages?

Weekly Housing Coffee Hour!

Join us every Friday from 10–11 AM for an open, intergenerational conversation about housing solutions in our community. Young families, newcomers, longtime locals and all perspectives welcome and needed.

The tools exist. The time is now.

RBC just released a major report confirming what we already know: Modern Methods of Construction can build homes up to 50% faster and 40% cheaper. The technology is proven in the Kootenays. The economic case is sound. What's needed is coordinated action.

The Kaslo Housing Society including chair Kathie Hanson joined regional organizations at the Housing Symposium in Nelson yesterday. Our own Erika Bird delivered a wonderful presentation on Penny Lane Apartments and Kaslo's projects, and Jean-Marc LaFlamme was there capturing content on housing innovation happening across the region. We are excited to co-create locally and regionally with all the community champions working toward real solutions. The Kootenays has everything it needs to solve the cost of living crisis and days like yesterday make it clear that deeper support and serious traction are within reach. Thank you to everyone who showed up and trying hardest!
