Lardeau Valley Historical Society

Lardeau Valley Historical Society Museum park featuring local history of Indigenous peoples, mining, forestry, and pioneering. Visit us on weekends, mid-June to mid-September, 10AMโ€“3PM.

The Lardeau Valley Historical Society was founded on April 6th, 1978 and plays an active role in the Lardeau Valley. We are dedicated to protecting and preserving both the culture and the history of the Lardeau Valley. In the mid-1990s, we obtained the historic Gerrard Fishery building and moved it to Meadow Creek where it serves as our Museum. Our educational themes include Indigenous cultures, h

unting/trapping, mining, forestry and lumber industry, farming, and the pioneer lifestyle. We have a small archives, including a large collection of digital photographs. The Lardeau Valley Historical Society proactively respects the diversity of cultures and experiences that form the richness of our West Kootenay Region. Specifically, we acknowledge our residency on unceeded lands and waters traditionally occupied by Ktunaxa and Sinixt Indigenous Peoples.

We're saddened to learn that Stanley Triggs passed away last week. Stan was a friend and supporter of LVHS, and donated many old photos. Although living in Quebec with his dear wife Louise, he spent ten summers here on the slopes of Mt Lavina to relocate the historic trail used by Indigenous peoples, prospectors, and miners to make their way over Lavina ridge. RIP, Stan!

Hi everyone! Here are a few photos of our hugely successful 25th Anniversary celebration last Sunday. An estimated 250 people turned out for this, and we all basked liberally in the sunshine of local history. Our thanks go to the organizers, vendors, musicians, artisans, food donors, volunteers, and to all who attended! And our appreciation to the funders: Columbia Basin Trust, Rural District of Central Kootenay, Nelson Kootenay Lake Tourism, LINKS, and Columbia Power Corporation.
