After years of dedicated service as a member of Kaslo Fire, including a decade as Chief, Doug Yee is officially hanging up his gear. 🚒

Mentor. Leader. The kind of person who made everyone around him better for it.

He showed up. Time and time again. And this community is safer, stronger, and more connected because of it.

KVFD is going to carry everything you built, Doug. That’s the mark of a great Chief.

We congratulate and celebrate you in retirement.
Enjoy every second of it. You’ve earned it!

This weekend was all about control under pressure.

Out at the Kaslo airstrip, we took part in an Advanced Driving Academy hosted by Mark Jennings-Bates, working through high-speed emergency driving drills that push both skill and focus.

Emergency braking.
Brake–steer–stop maneuvers.
Deteriorating lanes, forward and reverse.
Slalom with a trailer.
Off-road engine control.

An adrenaline-filled day with a lot of solid takeaways.

This weekend your Kaslo Fire Department, along with members from other halls around the RDCK, completed our Wildland Structure Protection Program (SPP-115) training.

We had a great couple of days being led by two awesome Structure Protection Specialists from BC Wildfire Service and getting some solid hands-on practice.

During the course we worked on setting up sprinkler systems around structures, running portable wildfire pumps, and building hose lays used to protect homes when wildfire is approaching. One of the main techniques we practiced is creating a “humidity bubble” around a structure — keeping roofs, decks, and the surrounding area damp so embers are less likely to ignite any fuels.

We also worked through structure triage, learned about the equipment carried on Structure Protection Units, and practiced tactics used to protect buildings before, during, and after wildfire activity.

Big thanks to the instructors and everyone involved in helping make the training happen.

Today we recognize the incredible women of the Kaslo Volunteer Fire Department.
They train hard, lead with confidence, and carry the responsibility that comes with protecting this community. Their strength, skill, and determination make our department stronger and our community safer.
Firefighting demands courage, resilience, and leadership. The women of KVFD bring all three, every day.
On International Women’s Day, we celebrate the powerful women who serve beside us and the impact they continue to make in the fire service.
We’re proud to stand with you. 🚒

Make sure you can hear the beep where you sleep.

Smoke alarms should be installed in every bedroom, outside sleeping areas, and on every level of your home. Take a minute to test them once a month and replace any alarm that’s 10 years old or doesn’t sound when tested.

If a smoke alarm goes off, get outside right away and head to your family’s outdoor meeting place. Once everyone is out, call 911 and stay outside until firefighters say it’s safe to go back in.

A quick check today helps keep your household safer tonight.

Hazmat Operations 👏

Three members of the department recently completed their Hazmat Ops training, moving them one step closer to their NFPA 1001 certifications and strengthening our response capabilities here at home.

Great work by the crew!
