A message from WLFD Chief Zydowicz:
Dear Residents and Neighbors,
On behalf of our entire fire service, I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to our community for the tremendous effort and commitment you have shown toward FireSmart initiatives over the past several years. Your work in reducing vegetation, maintaining defensible space, and improving property preparedness has made a meaningful difference in strengthening our community’s resilience to wildfire risk.
Thanks to your dedication, we have seen safer neighborhoods, improved emergency access, and increased awareness of the shared responsibility we all carry in protecting our homes and environment. These collective efforts not only help our firefighters respond more effectively but also significantly reduce the risk of fire spreading within our community.
However, as we look ahead to the coming season, we face new challenges. The Okanagan experienced significantly reduced snowfall this past year, resulting in lower-than-normal moisture levels across the region. Combined with forecasts indicating a hot and dry summer, these conditions increase the likelihood of elevated wildfire risk in the months ahead. This reality makes our continued FireSmart efforts more important than ever.
We are asking all residents to take further action in preparing their properties. Simple steps such as removing dry brush and debris, trimming trees and branches away from structures, maintaining well-watered and fire-resistant landscaping, cleaning gutters and roofs, and ensuring clear access to your property can greatly reduce wildfire hazards. Every property that becomes more fire resilient strengthens the safety of the entire community.
Wildfire preparedness is a shared responsibility. While our firefighters remain ready to respond, prevention begins at home. By working together, we can continue to reduce risks, protect lives and property, and preserve the natural beauty that makes our region such a special place to live.
I deeply appreciate your ongoing cooperation, dedication, and community spirit. With your continued support, we can face the upcoming season with greater confidence and resilience.
Thank you for your commitment to keeping our community safe.
Sincerely,
Paul Zydowicz
Fire Chief, Wilson's Landing Fire Department.
