Okanagan Mission Residents Association The Okanagan Mission Residents Association (OMRA) is a registered not-for-profit association made up of volunteers.

We work together to represent and facilitate positive interaction with the City of Kelowna, the Regional District and other organizations. The Okanagan Mission Residents Association (OMRA) is the official organization representing residents within the Okanagan Mission. Our neighbourhoods include the Lower Mission, Upper Mission, Crawford Estates and Kettle Valley. Our mission is to be your voice i

n the broader Kelowna area. We aim to advocate on behalf of our residents to the City of Kelowna and Regional District, keep our residents informed of activities across Kelowna that impact our community, and act as a community resource that can provide relevant and reliable information.

Our Board is made up of volunteers and we are funded entirely through donations and membership fees.

Yes, it’s the time of year when we welcome friends and relatives to the Okanagan, but right now is not the time for them to visit. Let’s open our homes and hearts to family, friends, emergency responders and others in the community who need our help and comfort.

Due to significant wildfire activity, please do not travel for non-essential reasons to the Central Interior and Southeast – including to the Shuswap and Okanagan.

We need to secure more accommodation for the tens of thousands of people who have been evacuated, as well as firefighters and emergency personnel who also need a place to stay. An emergency order is in place in the Okanagan to free up temporary accommodation, like hotels, motels and campgrounds, for people who need it.

This is the 20th anniversary of the Okanagan Mountain Park fires, and many of us have vivid memories of those traumatic events. Please exercise caution and help your family and community stay safe!

Public Service AnnouncementEnvironment Canada has called for high winds and potential thunderstorms today and through Friday. Residents should take extra caution around trees when the wind is high, avoid densely treed areas and take note of their surroundings.

This video from the District of North Vancouver graphically demonstrates the fire danger represented by the all too common cedars landscaping our properties. Because they are often close to property lines, your trees may also endanger neighbouring homes.

FireSmart BC has great resources for selecting trees and shrubs that are much more fire resistant.

“This video captures a fire at a DNV residence that was ignited from a discarded cigarette, 6 hours prior. Chief Hutchinson speaks on the dangers of the improper disposal of ci******es in hot and dry environments. We all need to be vigilant with fire safety in our community.”

OMRA President was interviewed by Chris Walker on CBC Daybreak for our concerns regarding the BC Governments’s proposed changes to municipal zoning regulations to allow for increased densification.

Our concerns remain the impact this may have on our road, transit and school infrastructure which are already inadequate for the community, as well as safety concerns from increased traffic and potential gridlock if an emergency evacuation is required.

The president of local residents associations in Kelowna are concerned about increased density in their neighbourhoods because the province is moving to allow up to four residential units on single family-zoned properties
