This week, from September 15-19, 2025, we join Children’s Aid Societies and Indigenous Child and Family Well-Being Agencies across Ontario in recognizing Kinship and Alternate Care Awareness Week.
Kinship is an arrangement where a relative, community member, or someone who has a connection to the child or their family can provide temporary care for children and youth and supporting their well-being until they can safely return to their parents or primary caregivers.
These placements are more than just temporary solutions; they represent an intentional effort to reduce trauma, maintain continuity and support the development of a strong networks for children and youth. The benefits of Kinship care can be profound including:
• Reducing trauma and anxiety
• A strengthened sense of identity with support from caregivers who deeply understand or share their cultural and familial background
• Continuity of familial, religious, cultural, and social connections that reinforce a young person’s sense of belonging
KRRCFS recognizes the important and valuable role of our kin caregivers who deserve to be recognized and thanked for the role they play in supporting the well-being of children, youth, and their families.
