The drive to Killarney is full of cool things to see. Quartzite mountains, lakes and rivers, and wildlife aplenty! In the Spring, one animal in particular spends a lot of time on or near roadways. The Blanding's Turtle! π’
Female turtles are leaving their wetlands in search of the perfect nesting site with sandy soil and lots of sun. The gravel shoulders of Highway 637 are prime real estate for these mothers-to-be.
While Blanding's Turtles are easy to recognize by their bright yellow chins and smiling faces, from far away they can easily look like shadows, potholes, or even debris on the road. Keep your eyes on the road to avoid colliding with these mamas who are just trying to give their eggs the best start in life. π
If you spot a turtle on the road and want to help her to her destination, you can pull over, if it's safe to do so, and es**rt her across. Make sure she continues in the direction she was already traveling. She knows where she's going!
Have you seen a Blandingβs Turtle on the drive to Killarney?
