The drive to Killarney is full of cool things to see. Quartzite mountains, lakes and rivers, and wildlife aplenty! In the Spring, one animal in particular spends a lot of time on or near roadways. The Blanding's Turtle! 🐒

Female turtles are leaving their wetlands in search of the perfect nesting site with sandy soil and lots of sun. The gravel shoulders of Highway 637 are prime real estate for these mothers-to-be.

While Blanding's Turtles are easy to recognize by their bright yellow chins and smiling faces, from far away they can easily look like shadows, potholes, or even debris on the road. Keep your eyes on the road to avoid colliding with these mamas who are just trying to give their eggs the best start in life. πŸš—

If you spot a turtle on the road and want to help her to her destination, you can pull over, if it's safe to do so, and es**rt her across. Make sure she continues in the direction she was already traveling. She knows where she's going!

Have you seen a Blanding’s Turtle on the drive to Killarney?

What do Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers and maple syrup have in common? You won't see either until the sap starts flowing! 🍁

Just like maple syrup makers, Sapsuckers harvest sap by drilling deep, narrow wells in tree trunks in early Spring. As the trees start leafing out, the birds switch to shallow, rectangular wells that need to be maintained all summer long. Sapsuckers can spend more than half their time just keeping the sweet and sticky sap flowing.

But are they really drinking the sap? Yes! They've got quite a sweet tooth, preferring sap from high sugar trees like maple, birch, and hickory. Like other kinds of woodpecker, they also eat insects found beneath the tree bark.

While maple syrup season has long passed, these Sapsuckers are just getting started. Will you spot one on your next visit to the park?

🌧️ The Spring rains have come! 🌧️

While there's still plenty of snow on the ground, recent rainfall and warmer temperatures have left trails muddy and creek crossings running high.

Hikers should plan for a variety of trail conditions from mud, to ice, to water. You may even need rubber boots and microspikes for the same trail!

No view is worth your safety. Be prepared to turn back if you encounter unsafe conditions.
