If a child encounters online sexual exploitation, sees any illegal content, or is contacted inappropriately online, report it to Cybertip.ca or your local police.

The police incident at Mount Baker Secondary School is no longer impacting traffic in the surrounding area, and there is no risk to public safety. Officers remain on scene and school property remains closed.

We would like to thank students, staff, parents, and members of the public for their patience, understanding, and cooperation while officers responded to the incident.

Parents and caregivers are encouraged to refer to School District No. 5 (Southeast Kootenay) communications for information regarding students returning to school and any school-specific updates.

There is currently a significant police presence at Mount Baker Secondary School as officers respond to an ongoing incident.
We ask the public to avoid the area to allow emergency responders to safely carry out their duties and to help minimize traffic congestion.

A message from Constable Mike Matteson:

I honestly don’t know where to begin, because “thank you” doesn’t seem nearly big enough for the kindness, generosity, and love so many have shown me and my family following my accident.

What started as a challenging time for us has been made a little easier by the incredible people in our community. From the messages, calls, visits, meals, donations, and check-ins, to the countless people who have simply kept us in their thoughts — every single gesture has meant more than I could ever put into words.

I have been reminded in the most profound way that we live in a truly special community. The way everyone has come together, offered a helping hand, and shown such genuine compassion has touched my heart deeply.

To every person who has reached out, helped, given, visited, cooked, donated, or simply thought of me — thank you from the bottom of my heart. I may never be able to repay the kindness you have shown me, but I will carry it with me always. I am incredibly grateful to be part of such an amazing town.

Cranbrook RCMP are thanking the public for their patience and cooperation following a police incident on August 31, 2026, that prompted road closures and a large police presence near Canadian Rockies International airport.

Early yesterday afternoon, Cranbrook RCMP received a report of an individual in distress. Public safety quickly became the priority, and a wide range of specialized resources were called in to support frontline officers.

Throughout the incident, Cranbrook RCMP worked closely with specialized RCMP units, including the Emergency Response Team (ERT), Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT), Police Dog Services (PDS), Remote Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS), and Critical Incident Command personnel. Officers from Kimberley RCMP also assisted in ensuring a safe outcome.

"This incident demonstrates the value of specialized policing resources and the strong collaboration between local officers and support units," said Cst. Munro, Media Relations Officer, Cranbrook RCMP. "Our primary objective was to ensure the safety of the public, our officers, and the individual in crisis. Thanks to the professionalism and coordinated efforts of everyone involved, the situation was resolved peacefully."

New fire at Meachen

REGIONAL WILDFIRE UPDATE (Posted 08.26.26 9AM)

The BC Wildfire Service is responding to a new wildfire (N12031) in the Meachen area, northwest of St. Mary Lake. The fire is approximately 1.1 hectares.

Suppression actions are being taken to limit the spread of this unwanted wildfire.
