Even in a global pandemic - the Greater Toronto Area continues to grow! Check out this article from Urban Toronto about the biggest stories in real estate, development and construction in September. Most notably, construction is well under way at 2 of the tallest commercial/residential buildings in Canada - Pinnacle One Yonge (3 towers at 98, 80 and 65 stories) and The One (85 stories).

We look back at a busy month on UrbanToronto, checking up on what the most read stories were, the busiest project threads, and the most viewed project database files, as construction and plans for the future of Toronto just keep on coming.

Last spring, the federal government introduced the Canada Emergency Commercial Rent Assistance (CERCA) program which provides commercial property owners with forgivable loans to cover 50% of a few monthly rent payments for “eligible” small business tenants. According to the federal government, the loans to property owners would be forgiven if the property owners agreed to reduce their tenants’ rent by 75% and not evict the tenants while the program was running. The subsidy was significant because it would have provided relief to many small business owners who had been facing insurmountable financial pressures due to COVID-19 and the resulting loss of business for the first half of 2020. Although the government extended the program through September - there has been no indication that the program will be further extended.

While it is clear that the government must balance the interests of commercial property owners and small businesses - the decision not to extend the program further raises many concerns for those effected. This article from the CBC provides an interesting insight into the program and outlines calls on behalf of Canadians to have the program further extended.

The Canada Emergency Commercial Rent Assistance program — the federal program designed to ease the pressure on pandemic-damaged businesses by covering a portion of their rent — expires today, leaving many Canadian businesses in the dark about what Ottawa has planned to replace it.
