The Kingston Police Service is advising the public of a temporary no-fly zone during the Concert Viewing Party of The Tragically Hip: A National Celebration occurring in Springer Market Square tonight August 22, 2026 starting at 7pm.

During this time, the unauthorized operation of drones or remotely piloted aircraft systems (RPAS) is strictly prohibited.
Kingston Police have already coordinated with the only other authorized operator who has an authorized SFOC for the advertised event.

The Kingston Police reminds the public that operating a drone in restricted airspace may result in enforcement action, including fines and other penalties. Lets keep everyone safe and this incredible event!

Rider Arrested Following Traffic Stop

On August 1, 2026, at approximately 6:18 p.m., a member of the Kingston Police Traffic Safety Unit observed a male operating a motorized vehicle (in this case an e-scooter) in the marked bicycle lane in the area of Division Street and John Counter Boulevard. The vehicle was travelling at a high rate of speed and was measured at 77 km/h using a mobile radar unit.

The officer stopped the rider a short distance later. During the interaction, the individual failed to comply with police direction and was subsequently arrested.
Further investigation identified additional offences and outstanding matters.

The individual was transported to Kingston Police Headquarters, before being released on an undertaking. A 42-year-old Kingston resident was issued seven Part III summonses for the following offences:
• Drive While Under Suspension
• Owner Operate Motor Vehicle Without Insurance
• Drive Motor Vehicle Without Insurance
• Drive Motor Vehicle Without Licence Plates
• Drive Motor Vehicle Without a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
• Fail to Stop When Directed by a Police Officer
• Speeding (77 km/h in a posted 50 km/h zone)

Kingston Police Reminder: E-Scooters Rules in Ontario and Kingston

The vehicle involved in this incident does not meet Ontario's definition of an electric kick-scooter under the pilot program. Under the provincial pilot regulation, a compliant electric kick-scooter has a maximum speed of 24 km/h. Devices exceeding this limit may be classified as motor vehicles under Ontario law and are required to have insurance, licence plates, a permit, a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), and a properly licensed driver. Failure to meet these requirements can result in substantial fines upon conviction.

Kingston Police remind the public that e-scooters are not currently permitted on municipal roads, sidewalks, trails, pathways, or other public spaces within the City of Kingston. Individuals who choose to operate e-scooters or similar devices that do not comply with provincial and municipal regulations may be subject to enforcement action, including charges, fines, vehicle impoundment, and other penalties where applicable. Riders are responsible for understanding and complying with all laws governing the operation of these devices.

Participation in the pilot program is a municipal decision, subject to provincial requirements and local regulations. The City of Kingston has not yet opted into the pilot program and is currently reviewing e-scooters and other micromobility options through a process that will bring forward recommendations for Council’s consideration.

Currently, e-scooters are not permitted on municipal roads, sidewalks, trails, pathways, or other public spaces.
Kingston Police are committed to promoting road safety and will continue to enforce both provincial legislation and municipal bylaws related to e-scooters and other motorized devices. Riders should not assume that a device marketed as an e-scooter is legal to operate in Kingston or exempt from motor vehicle laws.

Before operating any e-scooter or similar device, individuals are encouraged to familiarize themselves with applicable provincial regulations and local restrictions. Compliance with these rules is essential for the safety of all road users and to avoid enforcement action.

A CMV Inspection Blitz that took place on July 22, 2026. We had 6 of our newest Constables who had just graduated from OPC there being able to observe the inspections and gain great knowledge from our MTO partners.

Kingston Police Traffic Safety Unit and MTO Conduct Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Blitz

The Traffic Safety Unit, in partnership with officers from the Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO), conducted a Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) Enforcement Blitz in Kingston on July 22, 2026. The initiative also provided an opportunity for several of our newest Constables, recently returned from the Ontario Police College, to gain valuable experience observing commercial vehicle inspections.

The enforcement project focused on conducting CVSA North American Standard Inspections, which are designed to identify critical safety violations and mechanical defects that may pose a risk to motorists and commercial vehicle operators. Through these inspections, officers work to ensure commercial vehicles operating on Ontario highways meet established safety standards and regulatory requirements.

During the blitz, officers completed 30 commercial vehicle inspections, resulting in 9 vehicles being placed out of service due to major defects and critical violations identified under the Highway Traffic Act and the North American Standard Inspection Program. In addition, 14 Provincial Offence Notices were issued, along with numerous warnings for regulatory and equipment-related deficiencies.

These collaborative enforcement initiatives play an important role in improving road safety, promoting compliance within the commercial transportation industry, and reducing the risk of collisions caused by unsafe vehicles and operators.

Tomorrow (June 27), the Canada Celebrates FIFA World Cup event will take place at Springer Market Square.

If you’re planning to attend, please be aware that a temporary No-Fly Zone (NOTAM) will be in effect from 6:00 a.m. on June 27 until 1:00 a.m. on June 28. During this time, unauthorized drones and manned aircraft are prohibited from operating within the restricted area (see attached map) up to 500 feet above ground level.

The only aircraft authorized to operate within the restricted airspace is a Kingston Police drone, which is equipped with a parachute system for safe operation over populated areas.

Anyone operating an unauthorized drone within the restricted area may be subject to enforcement action.

Some of our recent Traffic Safety Initiatives!!! Keeping our roadways safe!!

Road safety remains a top priority during holiday long weekends, when increased traffic can lead to a higher risk of collisions and unsafe driving behaviour.

Over the recent long weekend, from April 3 - April 6, the Kingston Police Traffic Safety Unit conducted targeted enforcement focused on improper, unsafe, and aggressive driving.

As a result of these efforts, officers issued a total of 78 Provincial Offence Notices and 26 warnings for various administrative and moving violations.

The majority of offences were related to excessive speeding. Officers issued 61 speeding tickets, with drivers recorded travelling an average of 30 km/h or more above the posted speed limits. The highest speeds observed were 42 km/h, 51 km/h, and 59 km/h over the limit, all occurring in 60 km/h residential and commercial zones.

Additional charges included:

8 tickets for disobeying lane light
5 tickets for disobeying stop signs
2 tickets for expired permits
1 ticket for failing to display two license plates
1 ticket for operating a trailer without a license plate

Kingston Police continue to remind motorists that aggressive and high-risk driving behaviours significantly increase the likelihood of serious collisions. Drivers are urged to obey posted speed limits, follow traffic signals, and drive responsibly at all times.
