Preparing for a healthcare visit can sometimes feel overwhelming, especially when navigating unfamiliar environments, sensory challenges, or communication needs.

Autism Ontario’s “Preparing for a Health Care Visit” workbook was created to help autistic individuals and families plan ahead, identify supports and accommodations, and feel more prepared for medical appointments.

This practical resource includes tools and strategies to help you:
• Prepare for appointments and communicate support needs
• Explore sensory preferences and coping strategies
• Identify helpful accommodations and sensory supports
• Reflect on what worked well and plan for future visits

From planning your route to understanding sensory needs, small supports and preparation can make healthcare spaces feel safer, more accessible, and more supportive.

Today is Red Shirt Day. Established by Easter Seals Canada in 2019, this annual event takes place on the Wednesday of National AccessAbility Week each year.

Red Shirt Day® is more than just wearing red; it’s also about making a commitment to remove physical, attitudinal, and systemic barriers to accessibility and inclusion in your school, workplace, or community.

June brings longer days and a vibrant sense of connection and possibility. This month invites us to celebrate diversity, honour resilience, and recognize the meaningful contributions that strengthen our communities. As the days stretch into warmer, brighter evenings, June offers opportunities to acknowledge identity, history, and the diverse stories that shape who we are.

Below are some June observances. Please add any others we may have missed in the comments. These recognitions will continue to be highlighted monthly throughout 2026.

Originally recognized as National Access Awareness Week in 1989, the movement evolved into National AccessAbility Week in 2017 – reflecting a growing focus on inclusion, achievement, and removing barriers.

As we reflect on how far we’ve come, we’re reminded there’s still more to do to create truly accessible and inclusive workplaces, schools, and public spaces for everyone.

National AccessAbility Week reminds us that everyone deserves the opportunity to belong, connect and participate in their community.

At Community Living, we celebrate inclusion, accessibility and communities where everyone is valued.
