Wow! What a photo! What a character!! Topsy Farms
Fancy Pants Porch Sitter
Summer worker Jordan captures a spectacular shot of this local resident.
Meet the Grey Treefrog, affectionately known around here as the Fancy Pants Porch Sitter.
As long-June farm days give way to the lazy hum of twilight conversations and rhythmic strumming of an acoustic guitar on the porch.
As the guitar chords drift through the dusk, this Grey Treefrog is employing a brilliant survival strategy.
They are highly opportunistic hunters who camp out right beneath outdoor lights, letting the evening moths and beetles fly directly to them.
It’s the ultimate lazy evening buffet.
If they are startled into taking a leap, they flash a secret defense mechanism: a bright, shocking orange-yellow patch hidden on the inside of their thighs to dazzle onlookers before slipping away into the shadows.
Like the Wood frogs that fill the woodland and wetlands with their early spring soundtrack, this treefrog is a master of endurance.
When winter ice takes the landscape, they produce a natural antifreeze that allows their bodies to safely freeze solid until the spring thaw.
They are tough and adaptive.
A farmer looks at these resilient little critters and sees a true reflection of agricultural life.
Absorbing punches - whether from unpredictable weather or the complications of the outside world, it is simply part of the journey.
Like the frogs slowing their metabolism to survive a harsh winter freeze, a farm team learns to adapt, protect its energy resources, and wait for the right moment to sing.
Keeping these vibrant spaces protected requires a community.
Your Nature Preserve
Through Member Supported Conservation, nature lovers can help ensure the wetlands stay wet, the forests stay standing, and the farmland remains a farm.
There's a link in comments if this sounds interesting ⬇️
It offers a chance for families to visit a secret, hidden space that is not part of the main farm experience.
Critters like frogs, turtles, bats, and herons thank you
The next time a quiet evening calls for a slow guitar melody, a farmer might just keep an eye out for a neighbour enjoying the evening at the edge of the porch light.
