Dr. Heidi Cramm was recently honoured with Paul Harris recognition by our club. She has been honoured again by the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences for her work with Garnet Families, a national research and engagement hub based at Queen's that supports defense and public safety families and those who study, serve, and support them.

Congratulations Dr. Cramm, the honour is well deserved!

Join us for the 33rd Annual BCAK Walk for Awareness in support of Breast Cancer Action Kingston! 💗 👣

For 33 years, our community has come together to honour those affected by breast cancer, celebrate survivors, remember loved ones, and raise vital funds to support local programs and services.

Whether you walk in memory, in celebration, or in support, every step makes a difference. Bring your family, friends, coworkers, and neighbours as we walk together to show that no one faces breast cancer alone.

This week in place of our regular club meeting, we headed out to the Seniors Centre in Kingston’s Portsmouth Village for a planting bee.
Under the supervision of Nathan Nesdoly of Little Forests Kingston we helped plant 300 seedlings of native plants in a section of the Little Forest at the Seniors Centre. Little Forests help preserve the biodiversity of the area and help cool the air naturally, especially in urban areas. Walking through the portion of the forest that was planted in 2023, you can feel the cooling effect and noise reduction that these ‘pocket forests’ provide.

Following a tour of the other areas of this Little Forest, we adjourned to the Portsmouth Tavern for fellowship and to discuss or environmental work.

Last Wednesday rounded out a busy week for the Rotary Club of Cataraqui-Kingston.

That evening we honoured two deserving young women with Paul Harris recognition. Named after the founder of Rotary, Paul Harris, it recognizes the contribution of individuals who exemplify Rotary's motto of Service Above Self.

Sisters Sarah and Emily Monaghan are just 18 and 19 years old but both have a long history of volunteerism.

Sarah was the secretary of the Kingston Secondary School Interact Club; a bilingual reading buddy at the Kingston Public Library; a big part of the KSS bands, conducting the Junior Band this school year; volunteering for Lionhearts; and an active member of KSS Arts Council, all while playing competitive soccer and singing in Cantabile Choir playing music (and more).

Throughout high school, Emily Monaghan was very active in student council. Her contributions were recognized in two community awards—one in music and one in community service. She was very involved in leadership activities such as the Relay for Life, Student Council and Athletic Council. As a musician, she sings and plays piano and guitar. She honed her craft busking in Kingston. Her busking was a source of income, but she then turned to fundraising for causes she wanted to serve including Joe’s M.I.L.L. and Ryandale Transitional Housing. Emily is taking on a role with the Engineering Society at Ottawa University this coming school year to help with fundraising.

Sarah and Emily also formed a band that played for charity events including for The United Way and for Gov Fest.

These two dynamic young women are very deserving of Paul Harris Recognition.

The evening concluded with Sarah and Emily performing a song together. Please join us in congratulating them!!
