Partner Appreciation: Immigrant Services Kingston and Area - ISKA

The Newcomer and Employment services team at KEYS is proud to collaborate with the ISKA team who also supports newcomers with settlement needs, government documents, housing, school and daycare enrolment, community resources and connections, multilingual services, mentoring and counselling, language assessments, referrals, and more.

For many newcomers who join our LINC English classes, their language-learning journey begins with an assessment through ISKA's Language Assessment and Referral Centre. The assessment helps identify their current language level and the language training that best fits their needs. From there, learners can continue building their English skills through programs such as LINC at KEYS.

Thank you to the team at ISKA for being such an important part of our community and championing newcomer support along with KEYS and many other wonderful partners.

Sebastian joined KEYS as a volunteer for the summer months, before he leaves Kingston in September to pursue a degree in Education. Sebastian has been an incredible support for KEYS and our newcomer families during this time. He can be found organizing and playing sports with our refugee families at Lake Ontario Park during our recreational programming days - where he jumped right in without hesitation. Sebastian has also been supporting one of our refugee families to help get their four energetic children out of the house over the summer, supporting them to access recreational programming and enjoy the outdoors.

When asked what his favourite part of volunteering with KEYS is, Sebastian said "My favourite part of the role is seeing the kids that I work with grow as people. In addition, I enjoy helping to create a sense of community at the summer events and seeing the same people come back week in, week out.”

This International Youth Day, we celebrate the ideas, resilience, ambition, and leadership young people bring to our communities and recognize the importance of creating opportunities for their voices, goals, and potential to grow.

That commitment takes many forms at KEYS.

From helping young people explore careers and find employment, to connecting them with mentors through the InSight Youth Mentoring Program, supporting newcomer youth as they build connections and belonging, and investing in first-generation youth through the Michael Harris Youth Award, we believe opportunity can change the direction of a young person’s journey.

On International Youth Day, we celebrate the young people already making a difference.
