Congratulations to Jack MacIsaac on his election as Dominion First Vice President of The Royal Canadian Legion.
Jack is a former member of Kingston Branch 98.

His bio is as follows:
Dominion Vice-President Jack MacIsaac serves on several Dominion Command committees including as Chair of the Membership committee, and as a member of the Budget, Going Forward, Poppy and Remembrance and Royal Commonwealth Ex-Services League committees.

He is also the Dominion Executive Council representative for the Legion’s Western United States Zone.

Jack first joined the Legion in Nova Scotia in 1991. He has been highly involved at the local and provincial, and national levels.

First named as an interim Dominion Vice President in 2024.
Immediate Past President of the Legion’s Prince Edward Island Command.
Elected as Vice-President of PEI Command in 2019, First Vice-President in 2021, and President in 2022.
Former President and First Vice-President of Branch 1, Charlottetown, PEI. Also served in numerous positions including as Poppy Chair.
Originally became a member of Branch 98 in Kingston, NS in 1991, then moved back home to PEI in 2014 and transferred to Branch 1 in Charlottetown.
Retired from the Royal Canadian Air Force in 2010 after 33 years of service.
Resides in Johnstons River PEI with wife Patricia. They have one son who lives with his spouse in the Halifax area.

Kingston Legion 2nd Vice President Jason Gilbert presented a $1000 cheque on behalf of the members of Branch 98 to Major David Thompson, Secretary General of the Royal Commonwealth Ex-Services League (RCEL) at the Legion's 50th Convention in Winnipeg.

The Royal Canadian Legion helps Veterans and ex-service members of the Commonwealth and former Commonwealth countries.

The RCEL is a union of 56 ex-service organizations, from 47 Commonwealth and former Commonwealth countries, that promotes the welfare of Commonwealth Veterans and their dependents while helping them to meet their own charitable objectives.

In 1966, the Legion made a commitment to the RCEL to coordinate and assist the member organizations in the Caribbean area. Having made the commitment, and using donations from Legion branches, the RCEL Welfare Fund was established. The fund is administered by the Legion’s RCEL (Canada) Committee and assists Veterans and their widows in need in 16 countries in the Caribbean region. The fund can also be used to help provide medical and administrative grants, adequate housing for those in need, emergency disaster funds, Poppy materials to assist in Poppy Campaigns at the local level, and support to the organizations in managing the affairs of their Veterans and widows.

The Legion also works in cooperation with the Canadian International Development Agency, the Canadian Forces, the Salvation Army and other agencies to deliver services to Caribbean Veterans, and advocates for them through approaches to local and national governments.

In addition to the support the Legion provides to Commonwealth Veterans in the Caribbean, the Legion can also offer assistance through the Poppy Fund to Veterans of Commonwealth or Allied countries and their families residing in Canada, and coordinates benevolent applications to the Royal Commonwealth Ex-Services League in the UK on their behalf for additional assistance when warranted.

The Royal Canadian Legion is proud to be a member of the Royal Commonwealth Ex-Services League and we honour the service and sacrifice of Commonwealth Veterans.

Yesterday the Royal Canadian Legion paraded at the Winnipeg Cenotaph for our Centennial Convention.
A little history about the Cenotaph for those who are interested:
When Winnipeg's first temporary cenotaph in front of the Bank of Montreal at Portage and Main was removed in 1923 due to its condition, the time had come to create a new, permanent cenotaph. The city created a Cenotaph Committee chaired by former Mayor R. D. Waugh and held a national design competition that received 48 proposals. The design by Toronto artist Emanuel Hahn was chosen.

The choice was protested by several groups because Hahn was born in Germany, had come to Canada in 1892 at the age of eleven and was a naturalized Canadian. On February 25, 1926, it was decided to hold a new competition and Hahn was paid the five hundred dollars despite the rejection. The new competition was re-opened to persons British-born or born in countries which were allies of Britain during the war. The winning design by Elizabeth Wyn-Wood of Toronto, who happened to be the wife of Emmanuel Hahn, was rejected by the citizens. She was paid for her design and Gilbert Parfitt was chosen.

Parfitt's design was a column of stone with a bronze sword, cross and small lion heads. Construction began in December 1927 and the cenotaph was officially dedicated on November 7, 1928.

We are on the ground at the Dominion Convention in Winnipeg. Your representatives are Jim Hildebrand, Don Rioux and Jason Gilbert.
Yesterday we went to the many booths of the exhibitors and sponsors providing information to Legions. I was able to talk to the Dominion Services Representative and the Dominion Command Member Services Representative.
We attended Workshops on Veterans Services, Building the Next 100 Years: Modernizing, Engaging and Retaining Members, Poppy and Remembrance.
Of course a big part of the Convention is the opportunity to engage with other Legions from across the country and to learn and ask questions. I took the time to talk to our Provincial Executive Director, Carrie Hogan about some of the issues that we deal with in our Branch as well as a good chat with Harry Jackson, one of our Provincial Vice Presidents who gave me some very good advice with the Banner Program that we are trying to get started in the Village of Kingston. There is a wealth of knowledge available to us at these conventions and it's certainly an advantage to be able to talk to these people while they are corralled in a single centre of a convention.
