This is a headline in The Star this morning.

The issue of public perception doesn’t just rest on the heads of our elected officials. All liberals need to become more proactive in combating the disinformation that is so pervasive on social media.

YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

On social media and in conversations with friends and family, try sharing the good things our party has done for this country. We are leading the G7 in economic growth, we have one of the lower inflation rates in the world, and we were just rated as the second-best country in the world, second only to Switzerland. No-interest student loans, affordable childcare, universal dental care, grocery and carbon tax rebates…the list goes on and on.

When you see negative messaging and disinformation being spread on social media sites like Facebook and Twitter (X.com), reply and/or repost and point out misleading information and replace it with the truth.

Conservatives have paid social media influencers spreading rage, and their messages are usually filled with things that are either misleading or untrue. People are prone to believe what they see the most, and right now our social media networks are deluged with misinformation. We all need to get more active in countering this divisive rage-farming technique and in filling up our social media platforms with the truth about the advantages we’ve been given by our current government.

We won’t re-elect a Liberal government with apathy. If Poilievre ever manages to get elected, his conspiracy-based economic policies would seriously harm our reputation and standing internationally and damage our economy. His “ax the tax” approach would result in regression on combatting climate change at a time when we have no time left to waste! Cutting revenue generated by taxes means cutting funding to public services such as healthcare and unemployment insurance. Seniors would suffer from Poilievre’s plan to get rid of Canada Pension Plan. It is easy to see why Conservative policies tend to increase the gap between rich and poor.

Poilievre’s party is increasingly leaning into social policies that would take us back to the last century where human rights, women’s rights, diversity, and inclusion are concerned. These policies would make our country a more dangerous place by perpetuating government-condoned discrimination against vulnerable groups. This danger would be compounded by the strong influence our gun lobby has upon the Conservative Party.

His attack on our country’s public news source, the CBC, would erase a longstanding source of unbiased journalism and news for the Canadian people at a time when most of our news sources show an overt Conservative bias. Many of our news sources receive government funding, even the ones with a strong Conservative bias. If Poilievre removed all funding for news media, we could see a great reduction in sources reporting Canadian and local news. Many of our long-standing sources of news are larger media networks that also generate TV shows and movies. If Poilievre decided to remove all funding for our entertainment industry as well, many jobs would be lost and Canadian content would significantly decline.

There are many reasons for us all to get involved in combatting the rampant spread of Conservative disinformation. We can do this, but we cannot just sit back and wait for the next election to start.
