The NMRPC is mandated to develop and implement a Marine Use Plan for the Nunavik Marine Region.

The Nunavik Marine Region Planning Commission is an institute of public government that was established though the Nunavik Inuit Land Claims Agreement. It is mandated with developing a land-use plan for the Nunavik Marine Region.

Seasonal calendars can be used to create place-based, locally responsive, and culturally relevant frameworks for environmental stewardship. Here is an example from Nunatsiavut that we love! It was created by an amazing team that included Dr. Rachael Cadman, with artwork by Jessica Winters. We are grateful to be partnering with Rachael to create a seasonal calendar for Nunavik. We want to involve you, more to come!

We are excited to announce that we received funding to begin the creation of a Nunavik seasonal calendar! The work will ensure that the Marine Use Plan for the Nunavik Marine Region is grounded in Inuit knowledge and priorities. The funding is from the Ocean Frontier Institute’s Transforming Climate Action Community-Led Research Program. The program recognizes Indigenous communities as research leaders. It supports building respectful, reciprocal relationships between Indigenous communities and academic institutions. We are thrilled to partner with Dalhousie University for this work.

See the attached SAR Preparedness Activities in Nunavik (January–December 2026). The map provides a regional snapshot of planned Search and Rescue (SAR) preparedness activities throughout 2026 in Nunavik, including:

-Community engagement and vessel visits;
-Vessel acceptance activities;
--Risk Analysis of Maritime SAR Delivery (RAMSARD) exercises;
Maritime SAR exercises and training opportunities; and
-Other regional preparedness initiatives.

Calling all Nunavik photographers! 📸

The NMPRC is searching for photos of the Nunavik Marine Region that we can include in our draft Marine Planning Strategy to be released this fall for public input as well as other NMRPC media. We want to see the ocean and islands through your eyes, such as during a successful harvest, enjoying the sunrise as you head out on the water, or egg collecting on your favourite island! Participants will receive $50 per photo that meets the eligibility criteria, and the top five photos selected by our Board will also receive a prize of NMRPC SWAG.

This document, once finalized, will guide the marine planning process in the Nunavik Marine Region and hold us accountable for our work. The first draft of the strategy is now with the Implementation Committee for the Nunavik Inuit Land Claims Agreement (NILCA) for review.
