Good evening everyone,
I'd like to encourage you all to attend the upcoming meeting regarding short-term rentals and voice your concerns. While I personally enjoy using platforms like Airbnb when I travel, I believe LaSalle's situation is unique, as we don't typically see a high volume of tourists.
My primary concern with short-term rentals is when large companies or organizations purchase properties and rent them out indiscriminately. This transforms a residential property into a business, and as such, I believe the town should implement appropriate regulations.
Without proper oversight, these unregulated rentals can attract undesirable activities. It has recently come to my attention that a short-term rental in LaSalle has been allegedly associated with human trafficking. Neighbors have expressed their frustration to me about the frequent police presence and feeling unsafe in their own homes.
This is not the kind of environment we want for our community. We need to urge the council to regulate these rentals. Specifically, if the primary owner does not reside at the rental property where rooms are being offered, they should be subject to business taxes and require a permit for each room they rent out.
These are just my thoughts, but based on what I've heard from other neighbors, it's clear that these unregulated activities are not something we want in our town.
