⚠️ MISE EN GARDE À NOS CITOYENS ⚠️
Une citoyenne nous a récemment rapporté une situation de vol par diversion survenue à Lachute. Afin de sensibiliser la population à cette technique utilisée par certains voleurs, nous partageons son témoignage. Nous vous invitons à demeurer vigilants lorsque des inconnus vous abordent à proximité de votre véhicule.
📢 Témoignage partagé :
Il y a environ trois semaines, sur la rue principale de Lachute, un homme a frappé à la vitre de ma voiture pour me dire que mes clignotants ne fonctionnaient pas. Il a proposé de m'aider à les réparer à l'arrière du véhicule. Il tenait un fil et m'a demandé d'en tenir un autre pour qu'il puisse les raccorder. Nous étions tous deux accroupis derrière ma voiture. Il m'a ensuite demandé de remonter à bord pour vérifier si les clignotants fonctionnaient. C'était le cas. Pendant ce bref épisode, son complice s'est introduit dans ma voiture et a volé mon portefeuille !!!!!
Outre les démarches fastidieuses pour annuler mes cartes de crédit — sur lesquelles ils avaient prélevé plus de 7 000 $ —, j'ai dû faire refaire toutes mes autres pièces d'identité (permis de conduire, carte d'assurance-maladie, etc.).
Mastercard a exigé que je dépose une plainte à la police de Lachute, ce que j'ai fait dans les 24 heures suivant le vol. La police a traité l'affaire avec beaucoup de sérieux et m'a informée que cette technique de « diversion » est très répandue à Lachute et dans les environs (centres commerciaux, Walmart, rue principale, etc.).

• Gardez toujours votre véhicule verrouillé lorsque vous en sortez.
• Ne laissez jamais votre portefeuille, sac à main ou objets de valeur à la vue.
• Méfiez-vous des inconnus qui tentent de détourner votre attention.
• Si une personne vous signale un problème mécanique, assurez-vous d'abord de sécuriser votre véhicule et vos effets personnels.
• En cas de doute ou de situation suspecte, contactez les autorités compétentes.

A resident recently shared with us an incident involving a distraction theft that occurred in Lachute. To help raise awareness of this tactic used by thieves, we are sharing her account below. We encourage everyone to remain vigilant when approached by strangers near their vehicle.
📢 Shared Testimony (translated from French) :
About three weeks ago, on Main Street in Lachute, a man knocked on my car window and told me that my turn signals were not working. He offered to help repair them at the back of the vehicle. He was holding a wire and asked me to hold another one so he could connect them together. We were both crouched behind my car. He then asked me to get back into the vehicle to check whether the turn signals were working. They were. During this brief exchange, his accomplice entered my car and stole my wallet!!!!!
In addition to the lengthy process of cancelling my credit cards, on which they had charged more than $7,000, I also had to replace all of my identification documents (driver’s licence, health insurance card, etc.).
Mastercard required me to file a report with the Lachute Police, which I did within 24 hours of the theft. The police took the matter very seriously and informed me that this type of “distraction” theft is common in Lachute and the surrounding area (shopping centres, Walmart, Main Street, etc.).

• Always lock your vehicle when stepping away from it.
• Never leave your wallet, purse, or valuables in plain sight.
• Be cautious of strangers who attempt to distract you.
• If someone points out a mechanical issue with your vehicle, make sure your vehicle and personal belongings are secure before investigating.
• If you witness suspicious activity or feel unsafe, contact the appropriate authorities.
