Reminder....All Alberta Registry offices will be unable to process drivers licence and identification services June 29 and 30th. A complete outage of the Alberta Motor Vehicle system will take place June 30th at 3pm, in preparation for the outage, our office will be closed at 2pm June 30th. We will be closed July 1 st for Canada Day. We will resume regular hours July 2, 2026

Alberta driver’s licence and identification (ID) cards will feature an enhanced design, additional information and security features.

Changes are coming...

Changes to Alberta driver’s licences and identification cards will provide stronger protection against identity fraud and counterfeiting, as well as a more convenient way to access services.

The new design will display a Canadian citizenship marker when applicable, as well as your personal health number for eligible Albertans.

Applications and renewals cannot be done online, and original legal entitlement documents and your paper health card or mobile health care card must be brought with you to a registry.

Examples of documents include:
• Canadian Birth Certificate
• Canadian Passport
• Permanent Resident Card
• Secure Certificate of Indian Status
• Canadian Citizenship Certificate
• NEXUS Cards and RAST/EXPRES Cards indicating Canadian citizenship

You do not need to be a Canadian citizen to obtain a driver’s licence or ID card.

We are happy to report that, as of today (April 20, 2026), the Alberta government has announced it is reversing the policy on closed-course competition-only motorbikes. Policy previously stated these types of motorbikes could not be registered. Under the new policy, these motorbikes can be registered for off-highway use only.
