Lithium-ion batteries power many of the devices we use every day. Unfortunately, they can pose a fire risk if damaged or used improperly.

✅ Always follow manufacturer instructions
✅ Use the correct charger for your device
✅ Charge on hard, flat surfaces (not beds or couches)

How big is a hectare, really?

It's a unit we use all the time when talking about wildfires, but most people don't have a mental picture of what a hectare looks like.

Here's a cheat sheet:

1 hectare - a rugby field
10 hectares - twice as big as Rogers Centre in Toronto
100 hectares - about 73 Costcos

Wildfire size helps describe the area affected by a wildfire, but it doesn't tell the whole story. It doesn't mean that whole area is actively burning, nor does it describe how a fire is behaving, but it is a piece of the puzzle when understanding what is happening on the ground.

🚨 26 Weeks to Emergency Preparedness – Tip 23 🚨
Learn First Aid & Signal for Help

Supplies are important—but knowledge and clear communication can save lives during an emergency.

🩺 Tip 23: Take a first-aid course and add a HELP / OK sign to your kit

✔️ Enroll one or more family members in a first-aid course
Knowing how to treat injuries, control bleeding, or respond to medical emergencies can make a critical difference when help is delayed.

✔️ Include a HELP / OK sign in your emergency kit
Displaying this sign in a window or doorway helps emergency responders quickly understand your situation:
• HELP – assistance is needed
• OK – everyone is safe and no immediate help is required

📍 HELP / OK signs are available through EMC
You can arrange pickup by:
📞 Phone: 250-746-2560
📧 Email: [email protected]

Clear signals help emergency personnel prioritize resources and reach those who need help most.

This week’s tip continues building on your 26 Weeks to Emergency Preparedness journey by strengthening lifesaving skills and improving communication during emergencies.

With the fire that occurred at the lower Lake Cowichan Ball fields couple weeks ago, I believe it was unable to quickly spread due to Firesmart mitigation. When you remove surface fuels, limb branches, remove invasive species and dead debris you can create a much more resilient space that will make it a lot more difficult for a ground fire to spread. This summer with the Firesmart Community Funding & Supports we are able to employ Summer Students to help mitigate areas around our Fire Protection areas and residents homes who are elder or have mobility impairments.
If you have any other questions about Firesmart please contact me today and get a FREE Firesmart Home assessment. Lot's to learn about little ways you can create a safer perimeter around your home.

🚨 Emergency Preparedness Starts at Home 🚨

Teaching your children how to use 911 is a critical safety skill that could save their life—or yours. When introducing 911, make sure to:

✔️ Explain what 911 is and when to use it
✔️ Teach them how to assess an emergency
✔️ Show them what information to give the operator
✔️ Practice real-life scenarios together

Preparing your child today helps them stay calm and act quickly in an emergency.
