Day 3 (Friday): Common Hazards

A safe camping trip starts with safe habits.

Many RV fires and carbon monoxide incidents can be prevented by following a few simple safety tips:

1. Never use a BBQ, camp stove, or fuel-burning appliance inside your RV or under an enclosed awning.
2. Keep portable generators well away from your RV, windows, doors, and vents.
3. Have propane appliances inspected and maintained regularly.
4. Make sure everyone knows at least two ways out of the RV in case of an emergency.
5. Test your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms before every trip.

Camping is about making memories. Taking a few extra minutes to practice fire safety helps ensure everyone gets home safely.

Day 2: Why You Need Both

Smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms save lives, but they protect you from different dangers.

Smoke alarms detect smoke from a fire and give you precious time to escape.

Carbon monoxide (CO) alarms detect carbon monoxide, a poisonous gas that you can't see, smell, or taste.

Many RVs and campers contain fuel-burning appliances such as propane furnaces, stoves, water heaters, or generators. If these appliances aren't operating properly, dangerous levels of carbon monoxide can build up quickly.

Working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms provide the early warning you need when every second counts.

Know the difference. Have both. Test both.

Day 1 – Protect Your Trip

Before you head out on your next adventure, take a few minutes to protect what matters most.

Whether you're travelling in a motorhome, fifth wheel or camper, these life-saving devices provide early warning when every second counts.

Before every trip or time spend at the campground:
1. Test your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.
2. Replace batteries if needed.
3. Replace alarms that have reached the end of their service life.
4. Make sure everyone knows what to do if an alarm sounds.

Where should they be installed?
Smoke Alarms
• Install a smoke alarm inside or immediately outside every sleeping area.
• Mount smoke alarms on the ceiling, or high on a wall if ceiling installation isn't possible.
• Keep them away from cooking appliances to help reduce nuisance alarms.

Carbon Monoxide (CO) Alarms
• Install a carbon monoxide alarm outside each sleeping area, following the manufacturer's instructions.
• CO alarms are especially important required by law if your RV or camper has a fuel-burning appliance (such as a propane furnace, stove, water heater, or generator) or an attached garage or engine compartment.

A few minutes of preparation can make all the difference.

In the Township of South Glengarry, all motorhomes, travel trailers, fifth wheels, and campers must be equipped with working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.

In this 3 part series, we will explain why these life-saving devices matter, where they should be installed, and how to keep them working properly. Because when you're camping, safety should always come first.

If you're celebrating with fireworks over the weekend and into Canada Day, please do so safely and respectfully. Under Township By-law No. 20-2016:

Fireworks must not be set off between 11pm and 7am, or until 9am on Sundays. Fireworks must also be used safely. Setting off fireworks in an unsafe manner or in a way that creates a nuisance or safety concern is prohibited.

Please remember, before lighting fireworks, always have a hose or water supply nearby. Never allow children to handle or light fireworks. Always ensure fireworks are fully extinguished before disposing of them.
