Curious about ships anchored along the Colwood waterfront?

The Department of National Defence Harbour Master is the Port Authority for Esquimalt Harbour, including the Royal Roads Anchorages off Colwood’s shoreline.

These anchorages have been in place for many decades and have seen an increase in use over recent years, mostly by ships waiting for a berth in Vancouver.

This Throwback Thursday, we are going back to 1985 and the first election in the newly incorporated City of Colwood.

Geoff Dunn was elected Mayor for the City of approximately 9,000 residents. The inaugural was held at Juan de Fuca Arena and Council meetings took place at what was Colwood Elementary School (and is now West Shore Learning), until City Hall was constructed 4 years later.

What else was going on in 1985?
🎧 Never Surrender by Corey Hart and Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go by Wham! topped the charts
🎥 Back to the Future and The Breakfast Club were released
👔 Track suits, puffy sleeves, and windbreakers dominated the fashion scene

It's the second Advance Voting Day in the Municipal Election!

Voting takes place today, October 14 and on General Election Day on October 17 from 8am to 8pm at Colwood City Hall. Mark your ballot to elect one mayor and six councillors as well as four school trustees.

Talk about dedication to democracy! Irma, a 100-year-old resident, overcame a broken hip to come to City Hall to cast her ballot. Her determination should inspire us all to get out and vote!
