September’s featured image takes us to a familiar Colwood landmark: the Colwood sign along Veterans Memorial Parkway at Kelly Road.

Made from driftwood, it brings a little piece of our seaside character into the heart of the city. 🌊🌲It’s a small reminder of what makes Colwood unique: our connection to the ocean and the natural landscape that surrounds us, woven right into the places we pass every day.

Artistic signs like this one are more than just a wayfinding marker. For many, the sign has become part of the landscape we recognize as home, greeting residents as they travel through the community and welcoming visitors to Colwood.

It’s also a reminder of how much our community has changed over the years while still holding onto pieces that help tell our story.

It's Branch Drop off day. Get your branches in before the long weekend!

If you’ve got branches piling up after some summer yard work, bring them to the City’s free Branch Drop Off program for Colwood residents. Our Public Works team will be there from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. to help dispose of your yard waste responsibly and divert it from the landfill.

*Please note, there will be NO branch drop off on Saturday, Sept. 5 for the long weekend, and the next Branch Drop Off will be Saturday, Sept. 12.

Because this is the last drop-off before the long weekend, it could be a busy one.

Lagoon Road is fully open after emergency repairs to underground infrastructure this week. Thank you for your patience!

We're grateful to the neighbour who reported the issue at 2:45am Monday morning, and to our Colwood Roads & Utilities team who was onsite investigating by 3:15am.

Colwood staff worked from 3:30am right through to 7:00pm Monday to handle the repair and ensure the area was safe.

The team stopped the flow and controlled the lift station using hydrovacs with help from our friends at H2X Contracting Ltd.

Once repairs were complete, the road needed to be reinstated and repaved with help from Capital City Paving. That work is now complete and the road was reopened in all directions early this afternoon. A great community effort!

When Colwood was home to horse racing 🐎
It might be hard to picture today, but the land that is now Juan de Fuca Recreation Centre was once home to the Colwood Horse Racing Track!

Built in the late 1800s, the track featured both steeplechase and flat-course racing and became an important part of Colwood’s early history. By the 1920s, Colwood was a well-established stop on the region’s horse-racing circuit, drawing crowds to races at what was also known as Colwood Park.

This photo, dating to approximately 1924, gives us a glimpse of the track nearly a century ago. We’ve included both the original and a restored version so you can take a closer look.

From horse racing to recreation, this piece of Colwood has certainly seen some changes over the years and is now home to Juan de Fuca Recreation with a 9-hole golf course, pickleball courts, a skatepark, ice arena and sport fields.

🎉 West Shore Parks & Recreation is celebrating 60 years this September with Party in the Park on Saturday, Sept. 12! Join WSPR for a day of family fun, live performances, food trucks, vendors and fun activities.

Perched high on Triangle Mountain, Lookout Lake is a local favourite for swimming, picnicking, hiking and shoreline fishing.

We were very sad to hear about the passing of former City of Colwood employee Al Zboyovsky.

Al dedicated more than 35 years of service to the City, beginning in 1986 then returning after retirement until 2014. Fondly known as “Uncle Al,” he was a respected colleague whose dedication, kindness, and commitment to public service left a lasting legacy in Colwood.

Beyond his work with the City, Al was a long time Colwood resident and a dedicated coach. His commitment to community service extended beyond his professional role and reflected his deep care for the people of Colwood.

The City extends its sincere condolences to Al’s family, friends, and all those who had the privilege of knowing him.
