This was a great day in the Township. Started with the Langley Airport. Huge crowd enjoying a free event with so much to offer. Then off to the Musical Ride at Tbird. Had the grandkids with us and I could not ask for more.

The grand opening of the Dale Ball Disc Golf Course as good fun at a wonderful place. Beautiful setting with people in conjunction with the Township have a great community asset. Free to use as either disc golf or beautiful walk.

Let me set the record straight on Progress for Langley’s support for our union brothers and sisters.

We have signed 4 contracts in less than 4 years, 2 with our IAFF local 4550 firefighters and 2 with CUPE local 403 civic employees.

IAFF 4550 was without a contract for almost 3 years in 2022. We quickly signed a 2 year deal that played some catch up and set the stage for the next contract through the end of 2026. These agreements ensured our firefighters received competitive wages and positioned the Township as a leader in prioritizing mental health supports, including our peer support program that has been working well for over 2 1/2 years.

CUPE 403 was without a contract for 2.5 years and the new agreements once again focused on competitive wages and benefits that help the Township recruit and retain skilled employees.

We are proud to invest in our firefighters and civilian staff who protect our Township and deliver the services residents rely on every day.

Well yesterday brought back some memories. I dealt with some grass fires and they are hard, dirty work. This got knocked down but it shows how we are not exempt from possible interface fires. There are buildings just past this location, please be careful.

A great graph and explanation about where Langley Township is in regards to taxes in the region. We are always looking to control our taxes while at the same time ensure that vital services like Police, Fire, By-Laws, roads and more are meeting the growing need while taking care of past underfunding.

While we all want it to be less, or $0, the Township of Langley has some of the lowest property taxes in Metro Vancouver. When water and sewer utilities are combined (for those that have both), the second lowest. An average of $1,200 per year less than the regional average.

2nd from the bottom, only behind Port Coquitlam. And we will continue to make even more progress on this, with real plans to reduce water and sewer costs underway, to get us to the bottom.

Over the past three years we made a lot of progress on the budget, with more we need to do. So far, there are new processes for capital projects, to be more responsive, and to hold development accountable to pay for growth.

Further, we made $10M in reductions and cost savings from efficiencies and other adjustments to help pay for inflation, pay for more public safety, like a new fire Hall for Brookswood, more RCMP members, and an overhauled bylaw department. And while Ottawa increased the Township’s policing costs by 40% over these just the past three years, we reduced other costs or changed programs to pay for it.

As Mayor, with our team, I am committed to keeping the Township of Langley at the bottom by doing the work (which I enjoy), taking the budget seriously (not just voting against it without a single suggestion) and making sure public safety and taking care of our Township remains the first priorities, getting maximum value for tax dollars.

It is good to get this done so employees know how much they are paid for work and what their benefits are. This is now the 4th union contract done by our team in the term of this council. Instead of having contracts almost 3 years out of date, hard but fair negotiations and a willingness to do the work produces a good result for both parties.

Thanks to all that helped conclude a new two year agreement with the Township of CUPE Local 403 for two years, 2025-2026.

Township of Langley Council approved it last Wednesday, August 19, with local CUPE 403 following suit a few days later.

We needed to call a Special Meeting of Council to approve it. It was important to me to do that, as the only alternative was to wait for the next regularly scheduled meeting of Council on November 16.

It was important to me that Township of Langley staff not have to wait until November for significant overdue back pay accruing since January 1, 2025. It was also important to me that they not have to wait until November to know if the new agreement would be approved or not.

Sadly, I noted that several people running for Council decided to, once again, use a routine special meeting for this purpose as an opportunity to just make up whatever claim about what the meeting was called for, or its budget implications (of which there are none). Again, entirely fictional narratives.

Once again, this has demonstrated that many running in this election are prepared to say anything, and makeup anything, to create endless negativity, cast aspersions and mislead residents. It's quickly becoming the theme of this election.

Please watch and listen to this important video. It highlights only one of the many issues that is of concern with the BC Building Code from firefighters. Firefighter organizations both union and management were not consulted about this change and it should be paused until meaningful consultation with the appropriate organizations are held. Both the BCPFFA and the FCABC are concerned about this change. The NFPA has raised issues with this issue also. My years of experience as a firefighter and officer give me first hand knowledge of the dangers of this issue. Langley Township Council has endorsed looking into how to legally ensure that this issue is brought to a safe conclusion for firefighters and the public.
