Smith Athletic Park is going to be an incredible facility. For youth. For families. For students. For aspiring athletes. For parents, volunteers, coaches, referees, and future generations. For Langley.
Smith Athletic Park solves soccer capacity issues for years, needed because of our growth. All funded from growth revenues. Making our growth work for us.
It will finish mid-next year, alongside the new middle and secondary schools opening next September with 3,000 students, overall a 37 acre athletic and education campus like no other.
An indoor field is (obviously) an additional cost compared to not building one. But the business case is solid, and actually quite simple.
Athletic parks need washrooms, concession, storage, a field house, training rooms and other amenities, that are included within the building. Those things would have been $10M+ in any event.
A fourth field is a separate $16M investment, but when indoors, now serves U8 kids that struggle with weather at younger ages. And precisely because it’s available every day, it's predictable programming hours. That negates the need for as many as three additional outdoor fields, a future savings of $50M+.
If we are going to build a new athletic park, let’s build a good one. One that makes sense. One built and designed with a vision for the future.
Our opposition loves to lie to you about Smith Athletic Park. They tell us it’s for private entities. Nope. They claim it’s from property taxes. False. They claim it prevents a pool. Of course not.
This term, we needed to make real progress for youth, students, and non-profit sports with real capacity issues, to solve these problems that piled up after years of endless growth with so much apathy and inaction, caused by the same people, doing what they do best: nothing.
The Township of Langley now has the highest per capita student population in the entire Province of BC. Soccer enrolment is now thousands and thousands of families, and growing each and every year. That demands leadership, ideas, and a vision to make the most of what we have to work with.
In the last election, we promised to create Smith Athletic Park, to move the Langley forward, doing exactly what we said we do. Contract Made, Contract Honoured. Because it’s needed. And because it makes sense.
