The Great BC ShakeOut is coming!

📅 Thursday, October 15, 2026
⏰ 10:15 a.m.

Join communities across B.C. and take part in this year’s earthquake drill. When the drill begins, practice:

⬇️ DROP to the ground
🛡️ COVER your head and neck and get under a sturdy table or desk
✋ HOLD ON until the shaking stops

It only takes a minute to practice, but that minute could make a difference in an emergency.

Take a few extra steps to prepare:

📋 Review your Household Emergency Plan
🎒 Stock your Household Emergency Kit and Grab & Go Bag
📱 Know how you’ll connect with loved ones
🏠 Secure items in your home that could fall or cause injury
🤝 Check in with neighbours who may need additional support
📍 Know your evacuation routes and safe spaces

A resilient community is built one prepared household - and one caring neighbour - at a time. ❤️

This October, let’s Drop, Cover, and Hold On together - and take another step toward a more prepared and resilient Langley City.

📩 We’d love to hear from you! Send us a quick email at [email protected] to let us know how the exercise went for you, your household, workplace, or group. Whether everything went smoothly or you noticed something you’d like to improve, your feedback can help us build a more prepared and resilient community.

Do you have enough water in your emergency kit? 💧

Few things are more important for your health than having water that is safe for drinking, food preparation and hygiene.

Store at least 4 litres of water per person, per day, and don’t forget additional water for pets and anyone with specific medical needs.

It is best to purchase bottled water for your emergency kit. However, it is also important to know how to safely purify water if you are in a place where bottled water is not available.

“Why do I need a radio when I have a phone?” 📻

Your phone is an important emergency tool, but it relies on having access to cell networks or the Internet – services that may be disrupted in some emergencies.

A battery-powered or hand-crank radio can help you receive emergency information and updates when Internet, TV and cell services aren’t available.

That's why a radio belongs in both your emergency kit and grab-and-go bag.

Community safety starts with being prepared, connected, and ready to respond. 🏘️ 🤝 ❤️ 💪

The Langley City Emergency Program works year-round to help our community prepare for, respond to, and recover from emergencies and disasters. Through education, planning, coordination, and partnerships, we help strengthen our community’s ability to navigate emergencies and recover together.

So, how does the LCEP contribute to community safety?

📋 WE PLAN AHEAD: We help develop and support emergency plans, procedures, and resources so Langley City is better prepared to respond when the unexpected happens.

🤝 WE BUILD CONNECTIONS: Emergency preparedness is a team effort! We work with City departments, first responders, community organizations, volunteers, businesses, government partners, and others to strengthen the network that supports our community.

📢 WE HELP KEEP PEOPLE INFORMED: During an emergency, knowing where to get reliable information can make a huge difference. We support emergency communications and public education so residents can better understand risks and know what actions they can take.

🎒 WE PROMOTE PREPAREDNESS: Being prepared starts at home. We encourage residents to have a Household Emergency Plan, Emergency Kit, and Grab & Go Bag(s), understand the hazards and risks in our community, and know how to access trusted emergency information.

❤️ WE HELP BUILD COMMUNITY CONNECTION: This is one of the most important parts of what we do. A connected community is a resilient community. Getting to know your neighbours, connecting with local organizations, checking in on someone who may need extra support, and building relationships BEFORE an emergency happens can make a real difference when something unexpected occurs. During a major emergency, you may not only depend on emergency services - you may depend on the people around you.

🚨 WE SUPPORT EMERGENCY RESPONSE: When our community faces an emergency, we help support the City's emergency management structure and work with partners to coordinate information, resources, and response efforts.

🌱 WE SUPPORT RECOVERY: Our work doesn't end when the immediate emergency is over. We also help support recovery and resilience so our community can reconnect, rebuild, and move forward together.

And here's the most important part... YOU are part of community safety! 🫵❤️

-Every Emergency Plan, Kit, and Grab & Go Bag you put together.
-Every conversation you have with your family.
-Every neighbour you get to know.
-Every preparedness step you take.
-Every time you check in on someone.

It all helps make Langley City safer and stronger.

Together, we can build a Langley City that is prepared, connected, resilient, and ready.

🌫️ Wildfire smoke can affect anyone's health - even if you don't have an existing medical condition.

Take steps now to prepare for periods of poor air quality:

🏠 Stay indoors and keep windows and doors closed when smoke levels are high.
🌬️ If you have air conditioning, set it to recirculate. Use a HEPA air purifier if available.
😷 If you must be outdoors, consider wearing a well-fitting N95 respirator.
💧 Stay hydrated and have medications readily available if you have asthma, COPD, or another respiratory condition.
❤️ Check in on older adults, young children, neighbours, and others who may be more vulnerable to wildfire smoke.

Need a break from the smoke? Visit one of Langley City's Cleaner Air Spaces, including:
📍 Timms Community Centre
📍 City of Langley Library

Cleaner Air Spaces provide indoor locations with improved air quality where residents can find relief during periods of wildfire smoke and poor air quality.

A simple habit that can make a big difference: keep your gas tank at least half full. If you ever need to leave quickly - because of a wildfire or any other emergency - one less thing to worry about can make all the difference. Preparedness starts with small, practical steps. 🚗⛽️

Keep your vehicle's fuel tank or EV charge at least half-full if possible ✔️

This will ensure you have enough fuel or battery charge to leave the area if you're directed to evacuate due to an emergency like a wildfire.

🌫️ Be Ready for Smoke & Poor Air Quality 😷

Wildfire smoke can affect everyone, even if you can't smell it. Taking steps before smoke arrives can help protect your health.

✔️ Stay informed by checking local air quality and weather updates.
✔️ Keep windows and doors closed when smoke levels are high.
✔️ Use air conditioning or portable air cleaners with HEPA filters, if available.
✔️ Limit strenuous outdoor activities and spend more time indoors when air quality is poor.
✔️ If you need to be outside during heavy smoke, a well-fitting respirator (such as an N95) can help reduce smoke exposure.
✔️ Watch for symptoms like coughing, sore throat, shortness of breath, or eye irritation, and seek medical care if symptoms become severe.

People with asthma, heart or lung conditions, older adults, pregnant people, infants, and young children may be more affected by wildfire smoke.

Stay informed, take precautions, and help keep your family and community safe. 🛡️ And don't forget to check out our Cleaner Air Spaces page for more information -
