Pitt Meadows Firefighters - IAFF Local 4810 doing more with less.

This is yet another example of how composite paid-on-call call fire departments continue to fail to meet the demands of rapidly expanding urban communities.

These communities must make significant investments to ensure community and firefighter safety.

Wishing a speedy recovery to the injured firefighters 🙏

Letter to our community,

Over the weekend our members responded to another structure fire in a residential neighborhood. Crews worked diligently to knock down the fire and save adjacent homes.

A single crew of 4 firefighters worked to save 3 homes, essentially doing the job of 15. Eventually only 3 paid on call members with limited qualifications responded. Only 7 firefighters continued to battle the fire and interior operations had to be delayed until Maple Ridge responded to help due to limited resources.

A small number of qualified firefighters worked every phase of the incident without rehabilitation or medical assessment as outlined by NFPA standards.

Two 2 firefighters were injured. Both injuries were not severe but will still result in time loss and a recovery period.

Our members will always go above an beyond to protect our community.

However this incident like many others highlights the challenges of the current staffing model. We recognize there have been significant investments in ensuring a fully staffed first engine. However, that assumed there was adequate back up for larger incidents.

The Paid On Call model is failing to keep up. It can no longer be relied upon. A lack of qualified resources directly effects our ability to keep you safe and keep ourselves safe.

This incident is not a one off, it is the unfortunate state of the current response model. It is not the fault of any Paid On Call members individually, but rather the reality of the challenges that the POC model has as a whole to meet standards required for emergency response in a growing community.

Change is needed.

We are committed to working with admin staff and City officials to navigate these issues

This week Township of Langley Firefighters IAFF Local 4550 President Sparrow and Langley City Firefighters Association IAFF L3253 President Gray met with MLAs, Misty Van Popta , Jody Toor and Harman Bhangu in Victoria to discuss key issues:

đźš’ **Expanding Presumptive Coverage**: Include all occupational cancers & reduce employment accumulation requirements.

đź©» **Fire Fighter Health Screening**: Launch a provincial program for early cancer detection and health issues.

🤝 **Investment in Burn Care Recovery**: Secure funding for resources to support burn survivors.

These initiatives are a commitment to those who risk their lives for the safety of others and ensure burn survivors receive essential care.

🚨 Service Advisory 🚨

Despite a third-party review recommending a minimum of 6 firefighters on duty 24/7, once again administrative policy won’t allow it.

Squad 1 will be out of service March 1 from 07:00-17:00, leaving just 1 fire truck in service.

We remain committed to the safety of our community and will continue doing everything we can with the resources available. Thank you for your understanding and support.

Across North America, fire departments are facing soaring apparatus costs and years-long delivery delays. The International Association of Fire Fighters is leading the charge to hold manufacturers accountable — because this is a public safety issue.

Here in Langley City, our apparatus respond to more than 4500 calls each year. That level of demand accelerates wear and shortens frontline lifespan. When replacements are delayed or costs skyrocket, it’s our community that carries the risk.

Firefighters will always answer the call. Manufacturers and decision-makers must do the same.

Public safety depends on it.

The fire apparatus crisis, which, has led to exorbitant prices and delivery delays that can take years, continues to strain fire

The Saskatoon Paramedic Association has voted to initiate actions after two years without a contract.

Emergency services will continue throughout this action. Our Emergency Medical Dispatchers will continue to answer emergency calls and ensure ambulances are deployed appropriately, and paramedics will continue providing lifesaving care to the public.

‼️it’s about fixing a staffing crisis that’s straining our healthcare system and securing a real contract that protects emergency care in Saskatoon.

Congrats to Campbell River Fire Fighters Union on their new PFAS free gear!

New PFAS (forever chemical) free gear has arrived in CampbellRiver! 🚨🔥🚒

January is FireFighter Cancer Awareness month and we are proud to announce this major step forward in the health and safety of our members.
This was a team effort and we want to give a big shoutout to the City of Campbell River - Local Government and Fire Safety Group for working with us to make this happen; and a shoutout to the members within and the OHS Committee for continuing to push for our health and safety

Why does this matter?
Reducing exposure to carcinogens is critical for the long-term health of firefighters. This new Starfield turnout gear (provided by Associated Fire Safety Group) meets the rigorous new NFPA 1970 standards and features the Gore-Tex Crosstech Innovate moisture barrier—innovative technology made without PFAS.
