As the weather gets colder, it’s nice to have people like our good friend retired RCMP Corporal Randy Wong, and his wife Sahar making personal kits for the homeless. Randy stopped by this week to deliver the specialized warming kits that our crews can hand out when they encounter people who are in need. We really appreciate it Randy and Sahar. Feels Hot? Stop Using It.

Pay attention to the warning signs. Stop using your device or battery if it becomes very hot, starts to swell, smells unusual, leaks, smokes, or makes popping or hissing sounds.

These can be signs that a battery is damaged or failing and could overheat and start a fire.

When in doubt, stop using it and keep yourself and others safe.

Soft Surface? Hard Pass.

Where you charge matters. Always charge phones, laptops and other devices on a hard, flat surface like a table, desk or counter.

Beds, pillows and couches can trap heat and block airflow while a device is charging, increasing the risk of overheating.

Keep it clear. Keep it cool. Charge safely.

It's Fire Prevention Week | Oct. 4–10

We are joining the NFPA in this year’s campaign: “Charge Into Fire Safety™. Safe Charging Is a Superpower.”

From smartphones and laptops to e-bikes, e-scooters and power tools, lithium-ion batteries are part of our everyday lives. Safe charging habits can help reduce the risk of battery fires and keep our homes and communities safer.

🔋 Use: Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and use the charger designed for your device.
⚡ Charge: Charge on a hard, flat surface away from anything that can burn.
👀 Check: Stop using batteries or devices if they are damaged, swollen, unusually hot or show other signs of damage.
♻️ Recycle: Never put lithium-ion batteries in the garbage or recycling. Take them to an appropriate battery recycling or hazardous waste drop-off location.

Plug in. Power up. Stay safe.
