It was a beautiful day in the neighbourhood! 🏡

This weekend George Anderson for Nanaimo - Lantzville BC NDP and some of our wonderful volunteers were out and about, connecting with community members about the issues that matter most. It’s always great to learn from our neighbours, and MLA Anderson appreciates feedback he can bring back to Legislature.

Today was such a beautiful reminder of what building an inclusive and welcoming community looks like. While it was a joy to celebrate that, it’s important not to lose sight of the threats that trans and q***r people face every day. We’re proud to live in a province and country where we have the freedom to love who we love, but that doesn’t mean we’re immune to ideologies that seek to reverse that. Today, and every day, we’re committed to fighting for the rights of all people. Happy Pride, Nanaimo!

Nanaimo Pride Society is celebrating 30 years of Pride in Nanaimo, and 10 years of organizing the Pride Festival as we know it today. Team Anderson is excited to celebrate that by marching with our friends and loved ones in the Nanaimo Pride Parade tomorrow! Please join us!

We’ll be lining up at 10:30 a.m. near the intersection of Wentworth and Selby Street. We’re parade spot #58, located between the RDN Transportation float and the BC SPCA float (see the comments for a map).

Nanaimo Pride Society is bringing the heat, so prepare for hot weather! Wear sunscreen and breathable clothing, and bring water and an umbrella.

Please be aware the parade route does include some hills and uneven sidewalks. If accessibility may be an issue, the Nanaimo Pride Society will have an Accessibility Viewing Area set up at Dallas Square Park on the corner of Church and Front Street.

We especially want to share our gratitude with Minister of Health, Josie Osborne, for her honest and thoughtful perspectives on the Indigenous rights and healthcare issues shared by our members. We also want to shout out the amazing volunteers at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 256 - you make awesome pancakes, and we appreciate your hospitality!

While very pretty, Periwinkle is an invasive plant that is choking out native species in parks and rural areas around Nanaimo-Lantzville.

This weekend, Team Anderson volunteered with the City of Nanaimo to pull Periwinkle from a section of Neck Point Park that will be replanted with Garry Oak - a native tree species only found in coastal British Columbia (and parts of the US).

A great big thank you to Annie and our fellow community volunteers for the great conversations, investment in environmental stewardship, and opportunity to give back! This project was incredibly satisfying and we had so much fun!
