Members of the Lethbridge Elder Abuse Response Network (LEARN) and the Lethbridge Police Service will be recognizing World Elder Abuse Awareness Day with a walk and charity barbecue.

On Wednesday, June 15th – World Elder Abuse Awareness Day – police and LEARN volunteers will be walking with local seniors around the Civic Centre track at 10 a.m. A toonie barbecue will follow with all proceeds raised going towards the production of the annual senior safety calendar.

Elder abuse is defined as any action or inaction that jeopardizes the health or well-being of an older adult. It occurs in relationships with an older adult where there is an expectation of trust. There are many forms of abuse including financial, physical, sexual, psychological and medical abuse as well as neglect and violation of rights. Abusers can include family, friends or people who provide support.

The Police Service investigates many cases of elder abuse – often involving financial abuse by family or caregivers – and are committed to working with partners such as LEARN, to help educate the community and reduce the risk of an older person being victimized.

Purple is the official colour of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day and everyone is encouraged to wear something purple on Wednesday.

Canada Revenue Scam
A reoccurring fraud of someone posing as a member of the Canada Revenue Agency is again making the rounds as tax season is upon us. The victim will receive a call, email or text message from someone purporting to be from the Canada Revenue Agency who demands payment from the victim citing they owe money and will be arrested if they do not pay. The messages are often threatening and the caller at times can be very aggressive. The caller will ask for payment in a variety of forms from gift cards to money transfers all of which are not the standard method of payment for taxes. The phone numbers are often “spoofed” which makes it difficult to track where they originated from.
The Canada Revenue Agency has set up a link for advice on how to prevent becoming a victim of fraud.
