The AIDA applauds the Government of Alberta for installing Canada's first watercraft dip tank in southern Alberta at the Dunmore Watercraft Inspection Station. This innovative technology allows a trailered watercraft to back into the tank and receive a hot water wash to kill mussel larvae that may be present within the internal compartments of the watercraft. Prevention costs far less than managing an established invasion of invasive mussels.

Alberta is investing in Canada's first watercraft dip tank, adding another tool to help prevent aquatic invasive species.

This innovative technology complements our existing watercraft inspection program and protects our waters for future generations.

Welcome to Alberta Jane and Winnie. We are grateful you will be protecting the province from invasive mussels.

🐾 Meet Alberta's newest defenders against invasive species.

Alberta’s Conservation K-9 Unit has grown from one team to three, with Jane and Winnie joining veteran detection dog Hilo.

These highly trained dogs work with watercraft inspectors to detect invasive mussels in hard-to-reach areas of boats and along shorelines, helping protect Alberta's lakes, rivers, ecosystems and infrastructure.

A single mussel-contaminated boat can put an entire waterbody at risk, which is why prevention remains Alberta's best defence.

Thanks always to our colleagues at Alberta Invasive Species Council and the Government of Alberta who diligently work to bring attention to the risk invasive mussels pose to Alberta waters.

We followed Hilo’s nose to PWNER!🐶

The AISC attended the Pacific Northwest Economic Regions Annual Summit this week alongside the Alberta Government and Hilo, their invasive mussel sniffing detection dog to promote various campaigns including our new Wildflowers Not Weeds!!🌼🪻

Invasive species don’t stop at borders, so neither does collaboration! Always a great time connecting with old and new partners across the northwest 🤝

🚤 Watercraft inspection season is here!

From May 1 to Sept. 30, all motorized and non motorized watercraft entering Alberta from eastern or southern borders must be inspected.

If the closest station is closed, inspection is required within 7 days and before launching to help keep invasive mussels out of Alberta waters.

Anyone travelling with watercraft must stop when passing an open inspection station.

If you’re travelling with a boat, canoe, kayak or other watercraft this season, getting an inspection is part of protecting our lakes and rivers.
