Last Wednesday's training scenario focused on a "what if" situation.
What if a wildfire was moving toward town? What if our pumper trucks were unavailable due to maintenance or being displaced? How would we continue to provide effective fire suppression?
The answer: portable pumps and hose lays.
Using our portable water tank, firefighters established a water supply system beginning with a portable pump drafting water and supplying the holding tank. From there, a second portable pump was connected with a 2.5-inch discharge feeding a gated Siamese wye, which was reduced to two 1.5-inch handlines for direct fire attack operations.
A third portable pump was deployed to protect nearby exposures, providing a defensive stream to help salvage and protect property threatened by the advancing fire.
Training scenarios like this challenge our members to think outside the box and prepare for situations where conventional firefighting resources may not be available. By practicing alternative water supply and pumping operations, Lewisporte Regional Fire Rescue members continue to build the skills and confidence needed to protect our community under any circumstances.

This past weekend, six members of Lewisporte Regional Fire Rescue had the pleasure of attending the FDIC Atlantic (Fire Department Instructors Conference) in Wolfville, Nova Scotia.

It was a busy and rewarding weekend as we took in as many seminars as possible, often splitting into smaller groups to maximize our learning opportunities. From the opening keynote address by retired FDNY firefighter Ray McCormack, "The True Values of a Firefighter," we knew we were in for an exceptional conference experience.

Over the course of the weekend, members attended a wide variety of sessions, including:

• Electric and Hybrid Vehicle Emergency Response
• Fire Department Morale: Whose Responsibility Is It?
• Introduction to Tactical Thermal Imaging
• Managing Risk on the Fireground for Call, Volunteer, and Combination Departments
• Engine Company Errors: The Dirty Dozen
• The Three C's of Suppression
• What You Didn't Know About Fire Hydrants
• Thermal Imaging: Tips for Success

Of course, during some of our downtime, we also had the opportunity to visit our dispatch partners at Valley Communications in Kentville, Nova Scotia.

All told, the trip included over 20 hours of driving, 16 hours aboard the ferry, more bathroom breaks than we could count, and even more laughs along the way. Most importantly, we returned home with valuable knowledge and ideas that will help us better serve our community.

It was a fantastic experience, and one we would do all over again.

Wednesday Night Training & Meeting Update
This past Wednesday, Lewisporte Regional Fire Rescue held one of our regular dinner meetings. These meetings are a fundamental part of our department, providing an opportunity to discuss a wide range of topics, including upcoming events, training requirements, operational updates, and future planning.
During this week's meeting, Chief Lee Whiteway had the pleasure of presenting certificates to three of our firefighters in recognition of courses they successfully completed last May.
Firefighter King was presented with his certificate for NFPA 1041 – Fire and Emergency Services Instructor Qualifications (2019 Edition), Level I.
Firefighter Pardy received his certificate for NFPA 1001 – Standard for Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications (2019 Edition), Firefighter I, Module I.
Firefighter Jennings also received his certificate for NFPA 1001 – Standard for Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications (2019 Edition), Firefighter I, Module I.
Lewisporte Regional Fire Rescue congratulates all three members on their commitment to training and professional development. Their dedication to improving their skills helps strengthen our department and ensures we continue to provide the highest level of service to our community.

Ever wonder what happens when no one volunteers for the fire department?

NOTHING.

No fires get put out.
No vehicle extrications happen at car accidents.
No ice or water rescues get completed.
No one gets out of bed at 2 AM to help protect the community during major flooding events.
Volunteer fire departments only work because ordinary people choose to step forward and serve their communities.

The deadline is fast approaching for Lewisporte Regional Fire Rescue to accept up to 5 new recruits. Applications close on May 22, 2026.

If you already picked up an application and haven’t handed it in yet — now is the time.
Haven’t picked one up? We’ve got you covered. Applications are available at the fire hall or the Town Hall.

Think you can’t do it because you’re afraid of heights, dark places, or confined spaces? Don’t let that stop you. We work around your strengths — not your fears.

Like any well-run organization, volunteer fire departments rely on many different skill sets. There is more than one way to serve your community, and your abilities may be exactly what we need.

Step forward.
Serve your community.
Become part of the family at LRFR.

We honour your dedication, your courage, and the sacrifices made in service to our community.
"When a man becomes a firefighter, his greatest act of bravery has been accomplished. What he does after that is all in the line of work."
