Category 1 fires or "camp fires" will still be allowed. Camp fires are defined as small, recreational fires limited to a maximum size of 0.5 metres high by 0.5 metres wide. They must be in a proper fire pit or ring of rocks, with a fuel break surrounding them. A shovel or 8 litres of water must be immediately available to extinguish the fire entirely, ensuring ashes are cold to the touch before leaving the area
Effective at 12:00 Pacific Daylight Time (PDT) on May 7, 2026, Category 2 and 3 open fires will be prohibited throughout the Kamloops Fire Centre. A map of the affected area is available here.
In addition to Category 2 and Category 3 open fires being prohibited, the following activities and equipment are also restricted:
โข Air curtain burners
โข Carbonizers
โข Binary exploding targets
โข Fireworks, as defined in the Fireworks Act of BC
โข Burn barrels or burn cages of any size or description, except when used for a Category 1 campfire as defined in the Wildfire Regulation
โข Controlled air incinerators
This open fire prohibition will remain in effect until 12:00 noon Pacific Daylight Time (PDT) on Oct. 19, 2026, or until the orders are rescinded.
