Included: A book for all children about inclusion, diversity, disability, equality and empathy

Meet six wonderful kids. They love playing games, reading books, making stuff, and being silly. And like kids everywhere, they want to feel safe, loved, and included.

The reader is introduced to six amazing kids: Sam, Rishi, Jay, Audrey, Ty and Zara -eachwith unique abilities.'Included' sets out to explore diversity and inclusion, and to ensure all kids understand that children with disability are just like kids everywhere - they have things they are good at and things they need to work on. And just like kids everywhere, they want to feel that they belong and that they matter.

This book provides the reader with ways they can be more inclusive in their play and encourages the celebration of diversity in all its unique and wonderful forms. Children will come away with a growing understanding that people everywhere have differing abilities, and this only makes the world a more colourful, exciting, diverse and amazing place.

Throughout the text, open-ended questions are provided so children can bring their own experiences to the narrative. Further Discussion Questions are included to spark important and thought-provoking conversations.

Not So Different-What You Really Want to Ask About Having a Disability

Shane Burcaw was born with a rare disease called spinal muscular atrophy, which hinders his muscles’ growth. As a result, his body hasn’t grown bigger and stronger as he’s gotten older—it’s gotten smaller and weaker instead. This hasn’t stopped him from doing the things he enjoys (like eating pizza and playing sports and video games) with the people he loves, but it does mean that he routinely relies on his friends and family for help with everything from brushing his teeth to rolling over in bed.

Noah Chases the Wind

Noah is different. He sees, hears, feels, and thinks in ways that other people don't always understand. He is sensitive and perceptive, he asks questions most people would never consider, and he doesn't stop asking until he knows the "why" of nearly everything. But there's one question Noah has not been able to answer, "Where does the wind go?" Noah Chases the Wind is a colorful and magical adventure that celebrates the inquisitive nature of all children, as well as the unique characteristics of children on the autism spectrum. Children who see the world in their own ways may recognize themselves in Noah and learn to feel good about their differences.

The Disability Experience: Working Toward Belonging

People with disabilities (PWDs) have the same aspirations for their lives as you do for yours.

The difference is that PWDs don’t have the same access to education, employment, housing, transportation and healthcare in order to achieve their goals. In The Disability Experience you’ll meet people with different kinds of disabilities, and you'll begin to understand the ways PWDs have been ignored, reviled and marginalized throughout history. The book also celebrates the triumphs and achievements of PWDs and shares the powerful stories of those who have fought for change.

In Ontario, Disability Pride Month is celebrated every July to honor the identities, cultures, and contributions of people with disabilities. The month is dedicated to challenging ableism, promoting the diversity of disability experiences, and reflecting on the importance of visibility and inclusion. Ontario's recognition of Disability Pride Month is a significant step towards advocating for a more inclusive society and ensuring that the voices of disabled individuals are heard and valued. Throughout Disability Pride Month, Travelling Tales will be featuring a selection of books from our collection that celebrate disability, promote inclusion, and encourage meaningful conversations about diversity and belonging.

Canada Day is a day to reflect on what it means to be Canadian, to share what makes us proud and to celebrate in our own way. This pride is reflected in as many ways as there are Canadians.

Canada Day highlights the richness of our land, our diversity, our culture, our contributions, but above all, our people.
