This week we’re looking back at the grand opening of Windy Ridge Conservation Area in October 2004, a special milestone that marked the beginning of what has become one of our watershed’s most scenic and unique natural spaces. 🌿

Originally established through the generous donation of 87 acres by Hugo Germeraad in 1999, the conservation area expanded in 2004 through a partnership with Ontario Heritage Trust and Ducks Unlimited Canada, helping protect the incredible landscapes we continue to enjoy today.

From panoramic views at the lookout to the beautiful trails winding through wetlands, meadows, and forests, Windy Ridge Conservation Area has been connecting people with nature for more than two decades.

Join us on July 2 for a guided hike at Windy Ridge, where you’ll learn about the site’s history, discover some of its fascinating natural features, take in the stunning lookout, and hear about the work completed this season to help keep this conservation area in pristine condition for everyone to enjoy. 🥾

Keeping a close eye on water quality, one sample at a time!

Our stewardship team members, Natalie Caines (Seasonal Agricultural Stewardship Assistant) and Julia Derue (Stewardship Technician), have been out in the field collecting E. coli water samples as part of the Talbot River Healthy Environment Initiative.

Many of these monitoring sites are located in agricultural areas, making regular water quality monitoring an important part of understanding how land use can impact surrounding waterways and helping us protect healthy ecosystems for communities, wildlife, and the environment.

Collaboration and continued learning are key to building resilient communities 🌱

Recently, Kawartha Conservation joined conservation authority partners at the Sustainable Technologies Evaluation Program (STEP) Workshop to learn from low impact development (LID) design guidance and explore real-world case studies.

Opportunities like this help strengthen how we approach stormwater management and support more sustainable, climate-resilient communities across our watershed.

Recently, staff were out on Head Lake and Lake Dalrymple conducting lake health monitoring.

Lake health monitoring helps us track important environmental indicators such as water clarity, temperature, dissolved oxygen levels, and other conditions that support aquatic ecosystems. By collecting data over time, we can better understand how our lakes are changing and identify potential issues before they become larger concerns.

Healthy lakes provide habitat for fish and wildlife, support recreational activities, and contribute to the overall health of our watershed. Monitoring helps ensure these valuable resources remain healthy for future generations.

Kawartha Conservation is looking for a Permitting Analyst (Regulation & Permitting Technician) to support our Planning and Development Services team in Lindsay, Ontario.

This full-time contract position (35 hours per week) is a great opportunity for someone with experience in environmental planning, permitting, natural resource management, or related technical fields.

If you’re interested in supporting responsible development and helping ensure our watershed’s natural resources are protected, we’d love to hear from you.

Ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes to keep our conservation areas safe, accessible, and thriving for visitors and wildlife alike?

Join Kawartha Conservation on July 2 for a guided hike at Windy Ridge Conservation Area and get a behind-the-scenes look at the important work that goes into caring for the natural spaces our community enjoys.

Led by Conservation Areas Assistants Brooke Gallagher and Natalia Marzec, this one-hour guided hike will explore both the history of Windy Ridge and the day-to-day work involved in conservation area operations. As participants make their way along the trails, Brooke and Natalia will share stories about the conservation area, highlight some of its unique natural features, and discuss how the property has evolved over time.

This is a great opportunity to learn more about the people and work behind the conservation areas we all enjoy while experiencing the beauty of Windy Ridge firsthand.

⏰ Time: 9:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.

Wildlife Highlights from Head Lake & Dalrymple Lake 🦆

One of the most exciting parts of fieldwork is the opportunity to experience the incredible wildlife that calls our watershed home, and this week's lake health monitoring did not disappoint!

While collecting data on Head Lake and Lake Dalrymple, staff were treated to several memorable sightings, including an adult bald eagle, a young bald eagle, a baby osprey, a heron, and a duck leading her ducklings across the water. We also encountered several other species throughout the day that weren't captured on camera.
