Protecting the Burnt River, one brush bundle at a time.
Kawartha Conservation staff recently joined Ontario Streams to install brush bundles along a 45-metre erosion scar on the Burnt River.

Funded through Kawartha Conservation’s Water Fund, this innovative project is helping address erosion and sediment entering the waterway while exploring practical approaches to protecting local shorelines in the face of climate change and extreme weather.

Thank you to everyone who helped bring this collaborative project to life!

At Kawartha Conservation, so much of the work we do revolves around protecting, monitoring, and celebrating the beautiful lakes that make our region so special. These lakes provide habitat for wildlife, support recreation and tourism, and create countless memories for residents and visitors alike.

Most of us have seen oil floating on a puddle after it rains.

But not every chemical floats.

Some industrial chemicals are actually heavier than water. If they're released into the environment, they can sink deeper underground, making them much harder to locate and clean up.

That's one reason preventing spills is always better than trying to clean them up later.

Protecting drinking water starts with preventing contamination before it happens.

Join Kawartha Conservation on September 18 for a full day of presentations and discussions exploring lake health, watershed science, stewardship practices, and the challenges and opportunities facing our region.

The day will bring together experts, researchers, conservation professionals, partner organizations, and community members to share knowledge and explore ways we can better understand and protect our lakes.

Waterbugs: Tiny Creatures, Big Clues!

The children at the Omemee Baptist Church summer camp got to explore the fascinating world of aquatic bugs during an educational session hosted by Galen Yerex!

The kids learned about different aquatic insects and benthic invertebrates, and how these tiny creatures can help us understand the health of our waterways. Some species are more sensitive to changes in water quality, while others are more tolerant, making them valuable indicators of stream health. 🔎

It was a great opportunity for the campers to get hands-on, learn about the life beneath the water’s surface, and discover how even the smallest creatures can tell us a lot about our environment!

Tree Survivability Assessment Day! 🌳

How are our trees doing? Hunter Girdler spent the day checking on planting sites from 2025 to see how the trees are growing and assess their overall health and survivability.

These assessments help us understand what’s working, identify areas that may need attention, and track the progress of our planting projects over time. 🌿

They may all reach the ground, but they don't all behave the same way.

Some substances dissolve and move with groundwater. Others float. Some move more slowly, while others can travel farther than you might expect.

Understanding these differences helps scientists predict how contaminants behave underground and supports decisions that protect drinking water.

If you have an above ground fuel tank in a vulnerable drinking water source protection area, provincial rules may require a Risk Management Plan.
