The Provincial Water Quality Monitoring Network is a provincial program that measures the water quality in rives and streams across the province of Ontario.

Sampling theses sites provides stream water quality monitoring data for a number of parameters including; nutrients, metals, and salts such as chloride. Kawartha Conservation contributes to 11 of monitoring sites.

Sustained monitoring is important to assess long-term changes in water quality.

Planting trees today, growing opportunities for tomorrow!
On Sunday, Kawartha Conservation staff joined community members for a TD Tree Day event, helping restore an area previously impacted by invasive species.
With invasive plants removed, the focus turned to planting native trees, particularly sugar maples, to help create a healthier, more resilient ecosystem.
But this project is about more than planting trees. The vision is to create a space where nature and community can thrive together, with opportunities for future gatherings and events, perhaps even sugar maple festivals!
A big thank you to TD Tree Days and everyone who came together to make a difference. These trees will grow for generations, providing benefits for the environment and opportunities for people to connect with nature.

Hurricane Hazel’s legacy is a reminder of why understanding our watersheds matters. At Kawartha Conservation, that understanding helps guide decisions that reduce flood risk and protect the communities we call home.

DYK? It’s been 72 years since Hurricane Hazel devastated the Toronto region. 🌊 In just 48 hours, 285 mm of rain fell, causing catastrophic flooding and the loss of lives, homes and communities. Hurricane Hazel became a catalyst for stronger planning and regulatory measures to reduce flood risk and help prevent future tragedies.

Today, Conservation Authorities use comprehensive watershed data, floodplain mapping and other science-based tools to help inform safe development, reduce risk and protect people and property from flooding.

Follow along this fall as we share more about how your local Conservation Authority helps communities plan ahead, supports projects and reduces the risk of natural hazards across Ontario.
