It’s Clear in Queens!

Over the past several months, it’s been clear that residents of Queens County have been doing their part to understand the enhanced recycling program for Nova Scotia, and sorting their waste correctly - using clear bags for garbage and black garbage bags as privacy bags for personal hygiene items and medical waste. When the transition to clear bags from black garbage bags began back in January, 2026, to ensure that people had some time to understand the new rules for collection, all waste was collected over a 6-month period.

Starting July 1, 2026, clear bags are required for garbage. There is a limit of 1 black garbage bag per collection day, and a total of up to 6 garbage bags per collection day. If more than black bag is placed out for collection at a residential property, only 1 will be collected, and the others will be left, with a sticker advise that only one black bag is permitted. It is resident’s responsibility to bring uncollected materials in from the curb for proper sorting and preparation for their next collection day.

*** Recyclables still go in blue bags (sorted into paper and fibre, and containers - plastic, foil, etc.), and aren't included int he 6 bag maximum for garbage.

Download the R6Recycles app wherever you get your apps to take the guesswork out of what goes where. It provides helpful information about whether something is garbage, recyclable, hazardous waste, and “where it goes”.

It’s Clear in Queens!

Reminder: Starting July 1, 2026, clear bags are required for garbage. There is a limit of 1 black garbage bag and a total of up to 6 garbage bags per collection day.

It’s clear in Queens that residents and businesses have been quick to catch on to the transition from black garbage bags to clear bags! Since January 1, 2026, clear bags have been required for garbage, with black bags used as privacy bags. The transition has been going very well!

Residents were told about the switch to clear bags in Late December 2025, and that until July 1, 2026, all waste would be collected, giving people some time to get used to it. With summer coming, we are reminding everyone that starting July 1st, garbage goes in clear bags (up to 6 per residence, which may include 1 black privacy bag). Excess black bags will be left behind with a sticker to advise that only one black bag is permitted.

*** As in the past, organics go in your green cart, and recyclables are collected in blue bags (use as many as you need), with paper and fibre in separate bags from containers (glass, plastic, foil, etc.).

To learn more about waste collection, go to https://www.regionofqueens.com/municipal-services/works/waste-management/clear-bags/

The sun is shining and it’s exciting that spring and summer weather is here! It's fun to be outside, playing and being active. On a sunny day recently, there were many sidewalk chalk drawings made in the Mersey Skatepark on the grounds of Queens Place Emera Centre.

While it may seem harmless, chalk can cause the skatepark surfaces to be dangerous for Skateboards, Bicycles, Scooters and Rollerblades. Please keep safety in mind.

Did you know that there is a safe space to make beautiful chalk art creations? The 'Lot of Fun Park' is located on the grounds of the Thomas H. Raddall, on Harley Umphrey Drive, Liverpool - it is an enclosed area of the parking lot for people to safely play (and create with chalk)!
