Thomas Police Services and the OPP in the search and rescue of lost or injured persons across Middlesex County. Members of LSAR have been trained in First Aid, Basic and Advanced Search and Rescue, Rope Rescue, Man Tracking and many other areas

of expertise to effectively assist on searches. Our volunteers are on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Throughout the year, London Search and Rescue also provides a safety program to local primary schools & youth groups, such as Brownie/Scout troops. Our program consists of a video on survival (Hug-A-Tree by the RCMP) if lost in the wilderness, along with a presentation by our members on the prevention of getting lost and how to make the find much easier for searchers. Our members participate in this program strictly on a volunteer basis. We feel that this program is critical to the well being of the children in our community, as well as their families.

With extreme cold impacting our region, winter conditions can become dangerous faster than many people expect. London Search and Rescue is always ready to respond, in all weather, but preparation is key to staying safe.

This is how our teams dress and plan for cold-weather operations and how you can too:

🧥 Layer properly

Base layer: moisture-wicking (keeps sweat off your skin)

Mid layer: insulation like fleece or wool

Outer layer: windproof and waterproof

🧤 Protect exposed areas

Warm hat or toque

Insulated gloves or mitts

Neck gaiter or scarf

Proper winter boots with warm socks

⚠️ Cold weather tips

Avoid cotton. It traps moisture and increases heat loss

Add or remove layers before you start sweating

Carry extra warm layers when outdoors

Let someone know your plan and return time

Our volunteers train to operate in harsh winter conditions so we can be there when people need help most. Respect the cold, plan ahead, and dress for the worst-case scenario.

Stay warm. Stay prepared. Stay safe.

Our team recently took part in Stop the Bleed training through the London Health Sciences Centre Trauma Program. This hands-on course teaches essential skills to recognize and control life-threatening bleeding using techniques like direct pressure, tourniquets, and wound packing. Knowledge like this can make a real difference in critical moments before an ambulance arrives.

A big thank you to the LHSC team for delivering such practical, life-saving training. Learn more about the program here: https://www.lhsc.on.ca/trauma/stop-the-bleed

We would like to congratulate our very own Bart on receiving one of Canada’s national honours for volunteer service, the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers, presented on behalf of the Governor General of Canada.

Bart’s service reflects the very best of what volunteerism in Canada represents. He has demonstrated sustained commitment, professionalism, and a deep sense of responsibility to the communities he serves. His contributions extend well beyond any single role and are marked by consistency, reliability, and a willingness to step forward whenever he is needed.

This national recognition by the Governor General of Canada speaks not only to Barton’s personal achievement, but also to the values we strive to uphold as a team: service, integrity, and leadership without expectation of recognition.

Please join us in congratulating Bart on this well-deserved honour.
