Many thanks to Whitestone Lake Central School for having us out to host an AdventureSmart presentation and showcase our team to the students!

Students learned what to do to prevent getting lost and what to do if they become lost. Our AdventureSmart presenters also had different stations for students to rotate through covering our team equipment and trip essentials.

Want to book an AdventureSmart presentation? Contact us for more information on how.

As a reminder, our team is activated by police services, emergency services, and municipal or government requests based on the incident details. Once we are tasked, our team works alongside these partners and follow the direction of those in charge of coordinating search and rescue efforts. We are responsible for our team’s operations, communications, safety, and logistics but this is based on assignments given to us by OPP or lead agencies. Our Operations Managers work closely with those in charge to provide assistance as needed.

We cannot direct the public to get involved in the incidents. Although the assistance and support is always appreciated, those decisions must come from the agencies leading the incidents. These incidents often include a lot of moving parts and logistics, and it’s often helpful for those not involved to stay clear of the areas searchers and emergency services are operating in. Any information can be relayed through any established lines of communication, phone numbers, or at designated posts.

Our training yesterday brought members together to review search patterns, radio communications, and risk assessments done before/during operations.

We finished off the day with a scenario combining our newly certified Project Lifesaver team members, and a search for a subject around a water body. Our Operations Manager and Safety Officer were able to keep an eye on the teams from there staging area. The mock subject was located, packaged, and one of our members swapped in for the Mule ride back out. These sessions help our team maintain response readiness year round.

Does Bimaajitoon SAR work with other teams?

We sure do! As a member of Ontario Search and Rescue Volunteer Association and Search and Rescue Volunteer Association of Canada we have the opportunity work with various teams throughout Ontario and Canada.

Our neighbouring teams will often partner to respond to emergency management deployments to bring more trained members together to assist with the incident. Pictured here is a sandbagging team made up of our team, North Shore Search And Rescue and BAYSAR.

When on callouts, during training, and at events we often have multiple teams operating at the same time. These groups may have different roles or be working in different areas. Teams may consist of 2-8 members, with potential for much larger teams depending on the tasks/search.

Teams are always able to communicate with our command staff and with each other. We use various callsigns to identify them on the radio.
