An important reminder to our islanders.
Always consult the Burn Safe Map before burning, and always make sure you are burning safely.
So far this year, Nova Scotia wildfire crews have responded to 39 woods fires. These are confirmed incidents where fires spread into wooded areas and affected forested land to some extent.
While the total area impacted remains relatively low at approximately 22 hectares province-wide, the number of woods fires recorded so far this year is nearly double compared to this time last year. The lower area burned is largely attributed to fires being relatively easy to access and receiving rapid, full suppression responses from crews, quickly.
Conditions are expected to become drier in the coming days, with less rainfall in the forecast and rising temperatures expected to dry out vegetation and forest fuels. It is critical to follow not only the Province’s daily burn restrictions, updated each day at 2:00 p.m., but also any local municipal bylaws that may be in place.
The fine for violating daily burn restrictions is $25,000. Daily burn restrictions apply to provincial, municipal, and private campgrounds. National parks remain under the jurisdiction of Parks Canada.
To report a wildfire or violations of the fire restrictions, call 1-800-565-2224 or 911.
At this time, there are no active wildfires in Nova Scotia, with the exception of the fire in West Dalhousie, which continues to be monitored.
