It's hard to imagine that on March 26th in 1921, those present on the shore of Lunenburg knew what would come of the day's festivities. Who could have predicted that Bluenose would become the pride of Nova Scotia — an undefeated racing champion and Canadian icon? Perhaps those who built the unmatched vessel had an inkling. In time, all would come to revere the legendary Grand Banks fishing schooner. Today, the spirit and history live on in Bluenose II. As Nova Scotia's sailing ambassador, Bluenose II is a proud representative of our province and our maritime heritage. Our masts and main boom came out this morning for a thorough inspection and maintenance.

Now we are preparing the ship for winter before our crew leaves on October 15. Stay tuned for more updates!

On Sunday afternoon, Capt. Watson had the honour of inducting Capt. Angus Walters into the Canadian Sailing Hall of Fame. Capt. Watson stood alongside Chris DeBow, Capt. Walters' great-grandson, who accepted the induction on behalf of the family.

Angus Walters went to sea at the age of 14. At 23 he was commanding his own fishing schooners. In 1921, he took command of the newly launched Bluenose for the International Fishermen’s Trophy, a title he would claim five times between 1921 and 1938. Together, Walters and Bluenose carried Canada’s colours to the 1933 Century of Progress Exhibition in Chicago and to the 1935 Silver Jubilee of King George V in England. In 1955 Walters was among the first inductees into the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame. In 2005, he was posthumously named a Person of National Historic Significance.

Taking the masts out means we first need to take down the topmasts, and all the rigging.

Some lucky crew members get to work from aloft, 80 feet above deck on the mainmast. It's not for the faint of heart, but many deckhands say working aloft is a highlight of their season.

With the topmasts now safety on the wharf, we are one step closer to mast removal and the preparing the ship for her winter rest.
