With the crisper weather September brings us, staying warm and cozy by the campfire is a must! But here are a few reminders to keep yourself and your fellow campers safe! 🏕️

Recreational forest users, including campers, are responsible for 200 wildfires per year.

Here's how you can have a safe campfire at Ontario Parks:

🔥Only use the designated fire pit.

🔥Keep your fire less than one metre in height and one metre in diameter (it's the law!)

🔥Never leave your campfire unattended.

🔥Put it out by pouring lots of water on the fire and stir the ashes. Repeat until the ashes do not hiss.

Planning a visit to Silver Lake Provincial Park this fall? 🍂 🍁

Here are a few commonly asked questions:

Q: When does camping close for the season?
A: Camping ends October 13th.

Q: Is Day Use still open, and do I need a Daily Vehicle Permit?
A: Day use is still open, and a Daily Vehicle Permit is still required to access the park. You can purchase one online through our reservation website or at the gatehouse during operating hours.

Q: Do I still need to register if I am a seasonal permit holder?
A: Yes, seasonal permit holders do need to register their vehicle licence plate. This can be done online through the reservation website; after you enter your permit serial number, the day pass fee will be set to $0. Or at our gate house during operating hours.

Q: Do I need to have my dog on leash?
A: Yes, dogs must be leashed at all times while in the park.

Q: Can I use fallen logs/branches around the park for my campfire?
A: No, harvesting wood from a provincial park is prohibited.

🍄 This Feature: Chicken of the Woods

One of the most striking fungi in our forests, Chicken of the Woods is hard to miss with its brilliant sulphur-yellow and orange colouring.

This shelf fungus grows in overlapping clusters, commonly found on hardwood trees, often appearing surprisingly high above the forest floor. Next time you're out on the trail, don't forget to look up. You might spot a vibrant splash of colour overhead!

Its soft, fan-shaped shelves have wavy edges and a velvety yellow-orange upper surface. Flip one over, and you'll find a bright yellow underside covered in tiny pores rather than gills.

What do I do if I arrive at the park after the office has closed? 🤔

🌳 During the fall season, we will have reduced office hours, but it is okay if you arrive after hours! Below are some tips to help if you end up in this situation.

🍂 Pre-register your site before arriving at the park! Add the names of everyone staying on the site and the vehicle license plate. You can also self-check in through an email sent to you on the day of your arrival.

🌳 Remember your campsite number! We post a late arrivals list that includes the site numbers outside the park office, but it is good to come prepared.

🍂 If you do arrive after the gate is closed and wish to camp, there will be a list of available sites for one night posted at the gatehouse. You can book online through the reservation website or come up to the gatehouse in the morning to register for your night.

🌳 Park maps are available in a small, clear box on the side of the building next to the door.
